Adding illigit child using FTM

When the child is born to mother with unknown father and mother later marries(not the childs father) how do you enter it to prevent the child showing as a child of the marriage (apart from the dates)

Also
I have FTM 2010 and an update to 2012 which I have not loaded -does it just over right everything ?

You put the mother with a husband unknown and then attach the child to them
you can add any info on the child in the notes

You can add another partner to the lady when she marries and she will show then as having two partners and you can switch between the two to see the family she had with each .

Its the same as when a wife is widowed and she remarried and had children with both partners

Thanks Shirley-I will have a go

I have a really odd situation in my DIL tree

Miriam has spurious Mary in 1789

Miriam marries Joseph in 1796 & has 9 more children including William in 1806

meanwhile spurious Mary marries William (Stout) and they have Sarah in 1819

In 1849 Sarah (1819) marries William (1806)

Sarah is Miriams grandaughter
William is Miriams son

:-0 !!

As regards your second point, FTM 2012 will install itself as a new program - it does not over write your earlier version.

Once installed it will then allow you copy over your existing 2010 database and convert it to 2012 format.

OOH ERR so William marries his half sisters daughter have i got that right ?? so technically he was her uncle /. you could marry your first cousin but not an uncle or half uncle if there is such a thing . BUT these things went on and if they werent found out then it was left .

I have round robin too. My mothers paternal grandmother was married 3 times . her second husband was a 1st cousin thats OK but he died after about 8 years and she then married his elder brother .so another 1st cousin BUT he had been married to her younger sister . so lots of no no . cos you couldnt marry the widow/widower of a sibling. and her 3rd marriage was connected twice that way . They married out of the area in another church presumably so no one would shop them

They seem to have lived in the same area but both Miriam and Mary had died before the marriage so possibly no one else knew ?!

Having entered the original info before realising the true state of affairs I now cannot work out how to extricate the spurious Mary from Joseph and Miriams family without deleting all the subsequent info on Mary :-|

Unless I do Joseph comes up as gt grandfather X 3 to my DIL on both sides !

Thank you IGP-I get very nervous and imagine losing everything !!

Great I have FTM and you can merge duplicate info when families intermarried ,but I have done it on a hit and miss basis so didnt want to advise how I have done so just in case it lost info for you

I have a case where a lady marries a widower, 25 years her senior, as two children. He then dies. She then marries one of her husbands children from his first marriage, 15 years her junior, and has another daughter.

Try working the relations out!

Needless to say second marriage didn't last long and son remarries the next year bigamously many miles away.

FTM handles it OK, but the lady in question has to appear twice in the tree.
