Heavy guns were transported on gun carriages............if you've ever seen the Royal Tournament on TV, you'll have seen the races involving them.

This is some great information. It will be great to get this verified! I have checked the military records section and if William is part of my family line, he was an army private for 24 years and his trade was a wheelwright. Quick google search shows wheelwright to be somebody who makes and repairs carriage and other mobile equipment wheels! I would never have imagined a trade like this in the army, but i suppose times have changed since the early 1800's!! I had looked at some of those census records and wondered why the childrens birth places were so varied.

In 1871, Ann was a widow, with a 4 month old child among her family.

So, assuming that her husband fathered the baby, you have a very narrow time-scale in which to look for his death.

And the age at death will be on the index

EDIT

Sorry, Potty, didn't see your advice when I was typing..............

Possibility ONLY...............

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index, 1837-1915
Name: John Hopkinson
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1826
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1867
Age at Death: 41
Registration district: Nottingham
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
Volume: 7b

I have to say I'm suspicious about the 4 month old.............was he perhaps Susan's child? He was born in Southwell.......

It might be worth posting a request on Wendy's thread which kindly offers Notts lookups.................his baptism record may prove enlightening

Potty Report 12 Feb 2013 12:04

Ann is shown as a widow on the image in 1871 - two children have been born since 1861 and the youngest, John, is only 4 months. If John was the father, then that cuts down the search period for John snr's death - but there is an 8 year gap between the two youngest children.

Reggie,

Just picked something up which i think i missed the other day - you posted about John hopkinson being married to Ann in the 1861 census, but then in 1871 she appears with the children but no John - can i take it that he probably died between 1861 and 1871? as i cant find him anywhere in 1871

Ian

Ian Report 11 Feb 2013 22:07

I am working nights from today so will not be so active on here over the next week or so.

Hope to catch up with you guys again as soon as i can.

Ian

Ian Report 10 Feb 2013 21:20

So i guess if i get james and betsy's marriage cert, it will give me their parents names, and if i then go on to buy their parents marriage certificate this will give me their parents names too and so on?

''Good luck with your search and do come back if you need more help - and thank you for staying around to read the posts - most threads get an answer very quickly and it is very frustrating for helpers when people post and run!''

No problem - im not one to post and then not come back. Im 100% into this and am grateful for all the help im getting!

Roy - yes i have noticed errors in transcription already, although it didnt relate to my family i found somebody born in Edwardstone Notts, and there is no such place. On the original it read Edwinstowe!

Reggie - i will go ahead and buy the certificate to be sure!

This is great!

The evidence of census returns indicates that James' father was not William, although his grandfather probably was.

To be 100% sure, you should buy James and Betsy's marriage cert

TIP

You found the man in 1911..............his birth year was recorded as c1862.

That is what you work on..............

The census info (and the baptism) which I posted were found on Ancestry
