IGP,

On the first page of My Contacts (ie 20 members) the Relation column is blank for 7. Looking at the latest one of those, the initial message to me was a "can I see your tree".

Like you I always reply. The name being researched became the Subject of subsequent messages. (But that does not explain why the Relation field is blank. Or does it?)

Whilst not in agreement with these type messgaes, you can see easily the person they have picked up on if You go to 'My Contacts' and look under the 'Relation' column.

I also make a point or replying to all messages regardless, asking what their interest is in the particular person, and find more often than not, the member is relatively new to the site and believed they were following the correct protocol.

Now we have the ability to send attachments it is simple to send a chart or report, as Shirley says, if it turns out there is some sort of connection. Previously you had to go to the trouble of exchanging emails which was not always advisable.

My first reaction when I see those type of messages is NO CHANCE !!

I always go back though and ask what they are looking for and who they think we have in common on our trees. I often too just send the branch of the tree they are interested in if the connection is very loose ie a distant marriage into my family tree.

The reason you are getting these requests with no details......Is because GR thought it would be a good idea to just have an automated message, to save people making an effort to type a nice message of their own.

The people sending these messages may never use these boards, so do not know they are doing anything wrong.

GR have also said they were going to remove the said message......oh well

It is because of that automatic message you get when you use Search all trees.

I have written to GR requesting that they delete the message and when suggesting that members look in Search all trees I always include a note that they delete the "can I see your tree" message and type their own outlining who they are looking for.

Unfortunately, new members must think that it is the norm just to send that message.

When members request another member for access to their tree would they please
state why and give the detail of the person they are searching for. I get a lot of requests without any reason given, if you supply the detail it may save someone from following the route.
Other members have agreed with this, it is also good manners.
I will assist anyone with research, especially military.
