I have decided to remove most of what I said in this post, largely as a result of the fact that Susanwivnumbers, for one, didn't seem to understand the tongue in cheek way that i had intended the post to be taken.

Memo to self .................. double and triple check what you write before posting, as someone is bound to misunderstand your humour.

You'd have thought that I would have learnt better after almost 10 years on these Boards.

Although my message to NanaSue I think can remain ..............

.............. not sure I would categorise it as a "kicking"

I would call the responses you've had as "rather gentle" compared to responses other people have had on this site at various times, especially on General Chat (and that includes me)!

Joy Kentish Maid - please explain - lived most of my adult life in Africa so many English things just go over my head - lack of awareness.

Wonder if some folks have actually read the original post. It was a gentle question that is all.

We all know it is an individuals choice

Looks like anything I say I get a kicking anyway.......

Lol :-D :-D :-D :-D

They are rather glorious, are they not??

They are like that every year around this time

I think you have cherries to be proud of, Sylvia.

Jonesey and Kuros ..................

Thank you so much for making me laugh this morning!!!

Mind you, Jonesey usually does make me laugh ......... every day!! :-D :-D:-D

NanaSue .........

I use an AVATAR ........

... please note the correct spelling if you are going to send people "a jog"

and if you can tell what I am like from a photo of street cherry trees, then Good Luck!

Although ........................ I do have pink hair :-D:-D

It really is not the business of ANY member on this site to tell any other member what name they should have on the Boards, nor whether they should or should not have an Avatar.

Yes, it is fun to see what others use ..................... but it is NOT a necessity

It is a purely personal decision, that is up to ME, and ME alone.

Plus, there is the fact that Genealogy Chat is not the Board on which this should have been posted. This thread is much more suited to General Chat

Genealogy Chat does not need lightening up ........... it is one of the more serious Boards on here.

Annie, be careful - you'll get people digging up all sorts of records about Kuros and his lineage (as long as it's just the records they dig up).

I have to say, I thought you were a mis-spelled aftershave. I'm pleased I know now.

Regarding avatars, research lines, board names, whatever - it's all down to the preference of the individuals - and that's what we on here are.

Kuros

Kuros Report 10 Apr 2013 18:03

Cynthia, that's a new collar. I've just lost a bit of weight. I was relieved no-one recognised me in Tesco from my picture on here. Just to clarify things, I loved that cat, I really did. It's just that the daily reminder of him on here is too much to bear. We had a guinea pig at the same time who was called Scruff for obvious reasons. I couldn't quite bring myself to use that name on here. I'll await with some impatience - but without holding my breath - the results of Jonesey's research into the obliteration of the titles of dead felines.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 10 Apr 2013 17:11

I know what you mean, but most of those are newbies though Potty......not longstanding helpers.

I usually click on an 'unknown's' name to see what their name actually is as I feel a bit saying.....Hello unknown, welcome to the Community boards........lol

You were a lovely baby by the way...... ;-)

Potty

Potty Report 10 Apr 2013 17:08

I just wish people would give themselves a board name, or if they don't want to, sign off their posts with a name. There are an awful lot of "Unknowns" posting!

My avatar is me as a baby being held by one of my aunts. Unfortunately, I can't find the one of me naked on a sheepskin which my mother always had on show.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 10 Apr 2013 16:52

Not sure where you are coming from NanaSue :-S

Lighten the mood on here? This is a genealogy chat board, not a funny forum.

Avatars are not compulsory. There are some helpers who do not wish to place a picture on here for whatever reason. It's their personal choice. They simply get on with helping people.

As for not seeing Jonesey around for a while.......then I guess you haven't been looking in the right places..........he's our Scarlet Pimpernel and that photo was taken on one of his good days :-D

Kuros - I've always known who you are ......but your collar needs adjusting. :-D

Annie

Love it .....

what a conversation stopper ....

Yes , I am named after next doors dead cat !!

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 Apr 2013 16:43

Annie,

I used to use that picture but I found that the only dates that I got were with Goths.

I now use an "After" picture that I "Lifted" from one of those sites advertising male enhancement treatment. ;-)

I am now never short of ladies who wish to go out with me but unfortunately they all seem to lose interest after our first date. :-S

Regarding tips for removing the names of dead felines, I regret that my knowledge in that area is very limited but I will do a bit of Googling to see if I can find a solution to what must be a most harrowing problem for you.

Kuros

Kuros Report 10 Apr 2013 16:28

Thank you, Jonesey. Yours is very flattering. Have you lost weight recently? Is that the photo you use on those internet dating sites?

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 Apr 2013 16:28

Sue,

Why it is me of course but I have lost a bit more hair and a couple of teeth since the picture was taken. :-D

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 Apr 2013 16:24

Annie,

Your verbal humour above is much more likely to lighten a mood than any more fine detail in your avatar ever could. :-D

CupCakes

CupCakes Report 10 Apr 2013 16:22

Hi Jonesy - So glad you are here - not seen you on the board for sometime. I know it everybody to their own but I actually visualise the person by their image (Avatar I'm supposed to call it)

No insult intended - your Avatar is one of those I find really scary - who is it.

Hi Annie - until you signed it I would never have guessed you were a woman. Kuros is someting to do with bio meds....correct me if I'm wrong.

;-) ;-) ;-)

Kuros

This is me from my best angle in the dark. It looks just like the one Genes gave me. I sacked the hairdresser

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 10 Apr 2013 15:53

Does the mood on Genealogy Chat really need lightening?

If it does, will the mood lighten if the members who have, up to now, either forgotten to, cannot be bothered to or have deliberately chosen not to have an avatar get a "Jog" encouraging them to add one?

I very much doubt it, in fact I would suggest that quite the opposite is a distinct possibility.

Whereas the General Chat board may be considered as a board for socialising where such nonsenses might be appreciated, the Genealogy Chat board and the Find Ancestors board are for Genealogical help and research, not for making people smile at pretty, cute or humorous images.

Rambling

Rambling Report 10 Apr 2013 14:40

I have been helping over 'here' for a number of years ( since I felt I had enough experience to be of some use lol) and 'most' of the long term helpers have an avatar.

A few don't.....they may be new and not au fait with how to do so, or maybe they don't want a stock image from those available but don't have the means to put on a personal photo...or they just don't want to :-).

Not "everyone" on General does, some joined well before the avatars were an option and have not felt it necessary to add one.
