Goodness knows how they've transcribed some names

At a known address
Charlotte S is Charlotte T
Charles or variants is Ernest - at least, I've assumed its him!

One person redacted, who would have been my father.

Its a pity the redacted names aren't available on a search. It would solve who my deceased b1926 aunt was living with. She was fostered by various Aunts or Sisters.

I agree, RR!

Rambling Report 2 Nov 2015 12:06

ArgyllGran, I am just looking at one of those, in the preview my Uncle is listed, the 'other' person will be his wife Gweneth , who I think is represented in the list by "~???" as first name ;-)

Now who the two closed ones are I am at a loss to know... intriguing, but probably not £6 odd worth of intrigue :-D

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Nov 2015 12:00

I don't have credits to view the 1939 register, but have searched for a person, then viewed the Preview.

It gives the person's name, says there is one more person on the record, and also three more people "who are officially closed".

Sounds sinister! Is that "1981"-speak for "dead"?

That's a good start then, Looked for my grandparents, Daniel & Florence known address in Chester, with my mum redacted, as expected the index shows Daniel, looking for Florence, no Florence under F but under P for "Plorence" :-|

updated, FMP have asked me to email them after I mentioned the above on FB, so that would seem the way to go if you spot an error but don't want to pay to view the record if you already know what will be on it, as I did.

I've had a look too.
Couldn't find the one I was looking for ( don't know if they were alive or living abroad) and tried one with an unusual name just to see what the results look like - not on there :-S

Surprised the site hasn't crashed yet - could the cost be putting people off?

According to the search results my sister-in-law, who is alive and well, was born in 1862.

Aw, thanks for that A

Maybe I'll give it a miss then!

Regarding the information that the 1939 register includes.

'Photos' does this mean photos of the individuals?

If so, I will be buying into it as I do not have any photos of my GGrandparents

I've just been sent my 25% discount code. It is a one-off discount for buying first bundle. So it works out at £3.74 per household when you buy 5 household bundle for £18.71.

They seem to think I'd like to pay now, so I'm ready for Monday!

KathleenBell Report 29 Oct 2015 10:20

They are giving FMP subscribers a 25% discount off a 5 household bundle but I still think the cost is quite high and will put a lot of people off. A lower cost would probably get them more money in overall.

I cannot believe how much is being charged to see these records I do not belong to FMP but would have thought they could have given subscribers some kind of loyalty discount.

I remember when they first issued the 1911 Census they charged £3 per household fortunately I lived near enough to the National Archives to look at them free of charge.

I was looking forward to searching the records but will limit it to one Winifred Dodd born 1900, never married, died in Hertfordshire asylum in 1958 of cancer but no idea of where she lived in between.

Kense Report 28 Oct 2015 19:56

Regarding the register being maintained, this was probably because it was used for the NHS.

The alphanumeric NHS identitiers were taken from those of the 1939 register and used until replaced by the all numeric identities.

How to search the 1939 Register
https://blog.findmypast.co.uk/how-to-search-the-1939-register-1426317472.html

With the 1939 Register, you have the opportunity to carry out a free search using a wide range of fields that can help you to identify the correct record prior to unlocking it, whether you're looking for an individual, a household or an institution.

The 1939 Register advanced search screen allows you to search by name, precise date of birth (you can also be more vague, searching only by year), sex, occupation, marital status, street, district and more.

What's also useful is the option to search by other household member. This means that if the person for whom you're searching has a common name, but was living with someone with a more distinct name in 1939 then you can add them to the search to refine your results.

I've just found this on FindMyPast blog:

"Also you will find out what names the people in the household have also been known by. This could include maiden names or changes by deed poll. The register itself was maintained up until 1991, so the other names could be names the people in the house were known as prior to 1939 and also up until 1991."

I wonder how this register was being maintained? Who knew this was happening?
You have to wonder how accurate the updates to names are.

I'm maybe a bit more interested now. Maybe we may be able to solve some mysteries now by discovering a relative has changed their name by deed poll.

I've been reading the comments on the FMP website and found this quote from FMP :"Just to let you know, unlocking a record doesn't just grant you access to the record, it also provides a bank of fascinating content, including data, maps, articles, photographs and more"

I wonder what that means - I don't need the history of WW11, I can use an atlas/streetmap myself and unless the articles and photographs include the relative I'm looking for then I don't need it.

On another website forum I found out that the Isle of man & the Channel Islands are not included.

Re the Scottish 1939 register - info here:

http://tinyurl.com/pvj5avd

You can't search or browse.
You can only apply for an extract for a specific person, and you have to know their date of death.
A successful application costs £30; an unsuccessful one (if they can't trace the required record) costs £5.

It's disappointing that even searching isn't possible.

My "lost" Edith Butler is perhaps the only person I might consider using it for.
(But I don't know when she died, so that's a non-starter.)
