Joseph McCannb 1872 in Heworth Durham Married Elizabeth BARTON b 1882, dtr of Edward Barton B 1858 and Catherine Diamond B 1862 whom he was boarding with in the 1901 Irish Census - at 85 Bellaghy in Londonderry. She was 18 at that time and he would have been 28.
Also living in the house were Lizzie's siblings, Catherine 14, Margaret 10, Patrick 8, Mary 6 & Agnes 2.

By 1911 Census at house 5 Edenreagh Bellaghy Joseph 36, Elizabeth 28, Kathleen (Kitty)6, Joseph 4, Thomas Edwards 2, and Bernard 0 were living there.

The last of these children I am fairly certain is my grandfather Barney McCann who married my Granny Ellen O'Neill from Roughan, Dungannon and are parents of my ma Lily (Elizabeth) McCann b 1938 and her 2 siblings Joseph b 1936 & Margaret b 1940

Re Joseph's marriage to Elizabeth BATON can you confirm the surname as there is only one Baton (1911) Ellen Baton aged 14 living in Dublin....granddaughter of the Cannon family..(no parents or bros .sisters listed)
No Baton in the 1901 census.

When you say Bellaghy which County are you referring to ..? Antrim Armagh Derry Sligo ???

Re: SylviaInCanada's post:

Belfast, Northern Ireland, The Belfast Newsletter (Birth, Marriage and Death Notices), 1738-1925

Name: Mr Bernard McCann
Gender: Male
Notice Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 30 Apr 1858
Marriage Place: Ireland
Publication Date: 4 May 1858

Typical of Ancestry's rubbish transcriptions - it's actually a death notice!

"April 30th, Mr Bernard M'Cann, brassfounder, Great Edward Street"

Hi Maree, something's puzzling me - you mentioned that Joseph McCann served in the Northumberland Fusiliers, was wounded "in the war" and then had children - the last being 1910/11.

So, does that imply that it was the Boer War (1899 - 1902) that he was wounded in?

ausirish44 Report 11 Nov 2015 23:05

I am searching for the parents of Joseph McCann born in Bill Quays Sth - I can find him as an 8 yo living with Patrick aged 11 and a sister Mary aged 4. However parents do not seem to be listed. It is thought that maybe Joseph was illegitimate and his mother was pregnant with him when she arrived in England, she may have been Mary. Joseph McCann went on to serve in the Northumberland Fusiliers and went to Ireland after being injured in the war and married a young Elizabeth Baton from Bellaghy, they had 6 children, the last was my grandfather Barney McCann born 1910/11.

Can anyone provide any more info please?
Many thanks

Maree (Canberra Australia)
