Thomas was born in Westleigh/ West Houghton Lancashire according to other census.

I am hoping to find Ann Moss the mother of the Devany children, but cant trace either George Moss and Ann in 1901 or 1911 I looked for deaths in this range none showing.

Thank you looks promising for Henry in St Helens.

I found that Henry's sister Margaret Ann Devanny Smith emigrated with her young family in 1903. Her daughter Margaret O Smith was on a passenger list in 1922 coming from US to an address Hill House Cottage, College Street St Helens, no name of person or relationship was given as to who she was visiting.

Still hoping to locate Ann Moss in census or death record, looking to see if place of birth in Sligo gives a Town.

Do you have the marriage certificate for George and Ann?

That could give her father's name

Maureen

Maureen Report 25 Nov 2017 22:40

Thank you Sylviain Woolton is in Liverpool District, I see there are families with Devaney name in Liverpool.

There are so many different spellings for Devany it makes it more difficult to find records.

Ann Waters maiden married James Devany one child James Patrick born in Sligo so assume married there sometime around 1861, on her marriage to George Moss her father is listed as James Waters. a farmer.

I have tried to find a marriage and birth in Ireland with no success.

I have the Birth cert of John William born in 1869 in Bradford, to confirm his parents.

I cant locate the 1871 Census, I find them in 1881 in Westleigh Lancs. when Ann has remarried to Peter Smith this was before marriage to George Moss, the Devany children has been taken down as DING, included are James Francis born Sligo and John William, Henry, Thomas and Margaret Ann.

I think the William in St Giles will be too early, but the others are possible though not on 1881 census, I will check deaths.

Maureen Report 26 Nov 2017 16:04

Thank you Chris for all the information.

The 1939 Register address confirms Henry's niece was visiting him in 1922.

The 1871 Census has head of family as John Devaney, rather than James son John William b1869 Lancashire. James Francis b Lancashire.

1878 James Devany death

In the 1881 Census mother Ann now married to Peter Smith, living in Westleigh, Lancs she is listed born Sligo also son James F born Sligo although this could be taken down incorrectly.

The 1881 census John William 1869 is Bradford Yorkshire, I have obtained the cert and it does say father JAMES.

I found a Mary E Devany living in Westleigh in 1881 with another family.

The above Baptisms do look likely maybe the 1871 census details for James/John error as names of family members are the same.

I couldn't find a marriage for James Devany and Ann Waters, thinking that elder son James listed born in Sligo 1862c they would have married in Ireland,

I have not been able to find James F Devany or any record for mother Ann Moss and George Moss in 1901 and 1911

Thank you
