Border County Ancestors

Are there any tips for searching for Scottish ancestors living in a border county? I was surprised to find that one of my McDougall ancestors was born in Northumberland, England, but that he was married in Coldstream, Scotland and worked at a distillery before emigrating to Canada.

The bmds and census should show them
Once they moved to Scotland then you would need the website Scotlands People for bmds
It's not a subs site but units are reasonably priced to view records, plus you purchase any certs through them . Think they are still £10 each

The 1939 register isn't online

Depending on the timescale, certainly in the early 1800's, a lot of people from Northumberland were non-conformist so you won't find baptism and burial records in parish records. The Northumberland County Records Office has a lot of non-conformist records transcribed separately and easy to look through. The staff are very helpful and would probably do a search for you if you have names and dates.
