I'm sure this is a bit dim, but I'm new to this. How can I find out if someone else is doing the same or a similar family search to me. One or two have contacted me but I've no idea how they have done that.

Hi, welcome to the boards.

go to 'Search' at top of this page and click on it, it will then show a menu, included in that is "Search all member trees" click on that then put a name you are researching in the search that comes up eg Edwin Murrell 1924 ( use the +/-option for the years either side) and you will see who has him in their tree. Look to the end of that line and you will see "find out more", click on that and you will get a message box up where you can then send a message to the tree owner :-)
