I've been on the 1939 Register to see who was the previous owner/ tenant of a property that I lived in as a child.

The address is 2 St John's Road, Longsight, Manchester.

The property was demolished years ago and the Longsight Market stands there now.

No 2 is not shown. The first property listed is the Rectory There is a Church on the Road and I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the Rectory would have been in the grounds of the Church.

I do recall going to Communion lessons at the Church and from memory the Rectory then was a relatively new property

No 4 is shown, and I know that that one is correct as Mrs Callaghan was our next door neighbour.

It is not an essential search, just one that I was doing out of curiosity.

Also, No 4 is shown on the map of the time a lot further down St John's Road, than when I lived there.

At my time No 2 was just off Dickenson Road.

Help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

That's the one!

Curious as to why it didn't show on the 1939 register...perhaps it was unoccupied at the time

My mother got a job with Ellis and Co in 1959 or 1960 and the house went with the job, probably to deter any break-ins

It was a Victorian end-of-terrace house and had three floors plus a cellar.

Many thanks; at least I know that I've not lost my marbles completely :-)

The front downstairs room was the office, which was divided from the rest of the house by a separate entrance door in the hallway

This looks to be it- the house immediately prior is 361 Dickenson Road

On the image road is St. Johns Road- no idea why someone transcribed it as 'Saint'

the transcriptions are in a right muddle

I think the transcription of Edith Ellis should read Grocery Department, Co-op Society (rather than secretary).

I'll take a closer look at the Register.

I'm now intrigued by the new information regarding No 4.as on the entry I was looking at the occupant was a Bertha Heelrile who is shown as the only occupant.

Her name was later changed to Callaghan.

Whilst my initial search was just out of curiosity, I'll now delve further as my brother married Mrs Callaghan's daughter.

Well I finally found it!

I never thought to look up the complete word 'Saint' nor did I think to leave the apostrophe s of the end of John :-S

As for transcriptions, Mrs Callaghan's surname on the sheet that I initially looked at was given as Heelrile.

It should, in fact have been shown as Hubble.

She did indeed go on to marry Richard Callaghan in 1940
