Shirley, I never have problems saving submitted images from Ancestry.

Cas, I've sent a copy of the birth certificate.

Thankyou everyone. Really helpful info!

Thankyou also Shirley for the birth cert info - I now know tat her mother is who I thought it was. It just appears her later child Joseph has mmn Barker which should really have said Heath - that was what had lead me down the wrong path originally.

Thankyou all for the help. Loose ends now tied! :-D :-D

Yes it looks like the birth was registered at the time but re regsistered in 1941,because the scanned image is of the original birth cert dated 1941 for the 1921 birth

Yes you would need to,be a member of Ancestry to look at it

It won't save as it's a submitted entry

Mother is given as May Barker formerly Heath now the wife of James Swain

His occ is given as night watchman

She was originally reg as Barker mmn Heath

Births Jun 1921
Barker Alice Heath wolstantin 6b 194

So he was the dad and them later marrying legitimised her birth

Maybe at the time they didn't realise that so it took till 1941 for them to sort it out

Thanks Kathleen

That is possible. What threw me was May and James Swain (married 1923) had a son Joseph Wilfred Swain 1926 Staffs and record states mmn BARKER (not Heath) so I was looking at a different May.

I suppose it could have been an error and shouldve been mmn Heath?

James had been married before to a Ellen Massey and had 3 children with her so I suppose likely May had herself been married before - although father of Alice may be unknown.....

Could this be May's marriage to a Mr. Barker:-

England & Wales marriages 1837-2005 Transcription

First name(s) MAY
Last name HEATH
Marriage quarter 2
Marriage year 1911
Registration month -
MarriageFinderâ„¢ MAY HEATH married one of these people
Ethel Beech, Edward R Plant, >>>>>>>>Albert E Barker<<<<<<<<
District Stoke on Trent
District number -
County Staffordshire
Country England
Volume 6B
Volume as transcribed 6B
Page number 451
Record set England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005

This looks like Alice was registered in 1921 under May's married name, but perhaps May's husband was not the father and so she was re-registered in 1941 under James Swain's surname as he WAS the father.

Wow thanks for the info!!

Really intetesting! The name Barker was the mmn of her so called 'siblings'
'Parents' she lived with were James Swain and May Barker.

Now Im really confused.

If the birth was registered in 1941 does that mean that her birth was never registered at all at her birth in 1921? Was that not illegal?

Shirley do I have to be a member of Ancestry to see the cert?

Thankyou both very much for the info so far its really given me something to look into. The family always knew there was something unususl about Alices birth but didnt know what.

Regards
Cassie

Ps I have to break off now as Im away in holiday and signal very poor so please dont think Ive scarpered - I will be back.

There is a copy of the original birth cert in an ancestry tree
It's dated 1941 and is a late registration for the 1921 birth that's seems not to have beeen reg at the time

Edit no it's a correction and re reg of her birth to show her actual fahers name

The date on the index actually looks like J 41.

If you check the birth index for 1941, there is a birth entry for an Alice SWAIN and with the same page index there is an entry for an Alice BARKER, both with mother's maiden names HEATH.
This might be a coincidence, but maybe you will know if the BARKER surname could be for the same person.

Thanks Gwyn

There is a little mistery surrounding her as her mmn is different to her siblings. Is there any way of finding out what an amendment would be in 1944 when she was 23yrs of age?

Regards
Cassie :-)

The year is split into Quarters January February March which would be logged as M, then comes April, May, June, which would be J (the initial letter of the last month of the quarter) etc.

J 44 would be referring to June quarter of 1944, where there would be an entry amending the 1921 entry.
