Hello, If someone died in Westminster Hospital London in 1964, where would be the most likely place for burial? I am looking for my Husband's Grandfather. Many Thanks

City of Westminster operate 3 cemetries.

East Finchley.
Hanwell.
Mill Hill.

all have cremation facilities so a possibility in 1964.

But did they live in London, or in the Westminster Hospital area?

They could have been visiting, in which case the body might have been taken "home".

They may have been admitted there for specialist treatment.

Have you got the death cert

The parks and cemeteries dept of the local council will have details of municipal cemeteries and crematoria .

Give them the details from the death cert and they should be able to give you the details

May charge though as many councils now charge for searches

Have you thought that he may have been cremated?

Also, was he born in the are where he died - if not, he could have been buried/cremated in his birthplace.

My father was buried in his birth town, which was certainly not where he died

A copy of the 1964 death certificate will state if a cremation was in order........

*causing the body to be cremated* will written on it, but wont give any clues where.

and the same if the deceased was to be buried.

Thank you , I did not know that the buried or cremated was written on the death cert. Has that been phased out now, as I received a death certificate the other day for 1996 and it wasn't stated on that one?

I have discovered today from an elderly relative that he was buried in a London cemetery near his home in Ebury bridge near Victoria.

then he could be buried in brompton cemertary

Have checked Brompton, Highgate, Mortlake, City of London, Fulham, Hanwell, Mill Hill, East Finchley, he is not in any of these cemeteries.

The death must normally be registered by the next-of-kin but if there are no close relatives (or they are not living close enough) then the executor, if any, or otherwise a friend, or a Solicitor, can register the death if he or she is 'causing the body to be buried or cremated'.

Thank you ErikaH, that makes sense. I know that his family were living close by so would more than likely have arranged the funeral.
