How to search 1901 & 1911 census by address only.

No, it only works for 1911, and 1881, because the addresses are included in the transcription.

In other years, they're not, on Ancestry, so that search doesn't work.

Thank you ArgyllGran. It's worked for 1911, but not, unfortunately, for 1901 :-)

On Ancestry, on the search page for Census and Electoral Rolls, enter the town name at "Lived in", and enter the address at "Keyword". Also tick the "Exact" box.

And of course select the 1911 census as the one to search.

It's not totally foolproof. For instance, if you 're looking for 75 Guildford Street, it will give you results for Guildford Street, but also any address with 75 in it.

Ah. Thanks Kath. I'm trying on Ancestry. It mustn't have the option then. Should have plumped for Findmypast instead. :-)

Depends which site you are using for the census. On Findmypast there is this advice:-

How can I search a census by address?
Answer:
To search for an address in an individual census year, choose the 'A-Z of Record Sets' drop down from the 'Search records' menus.

You can then enter the name of the census in the search bar to find the individual census year (e.g 1881,1891 etc.).

Once the required census year has been selected the search page will then load and the option to search by address for that census year will be available.

With the 1901 and 1911 census years, there is an 'Address' tab on the search page that would then need to be clicked to search by address.

I have never used the records on Genes so I can't help if that is what you are using.

Please will someone remind me how to search the census for an address only. I know it's possible but can't for the life of me remember. Thank you.
