DNA TEST... WHAT NEXT?

Hi all
I keep my full tree here with Genes, and have just received my results from an Ancestry DNA test. I only have a skeletal tree on Ancestry (and have no membership for searching on either site).
How do I link my tree here at Genes with the Ancestry Result? and
How do I transport my tree to Ancestry to compare the result there?
I have tried to understand the process of importing and exporting gedcoms, but I am actually frightened I will lose it all!
Hope someone can advise.
Thankyou

Flip

Hi, I don't believe you can link your Genes tree direct to the ancestry DNA results.

If you click on Family tree/EXPORT GEDCOM a file will be created by GR and sent to your e-mail account. This will not affect your GR tree, it's simply a copy of the data.

Save the file, then go to ancestry. Click on trees/Create & manage trees. You can either create a new tree, or over-write your existing ancestry one. Once you decide which is better for you, click on Upload a GEDCOM file, and follow the instructions.

NEVER click on import gedcom on your GR tree, anything imported will overwrite you tree and you'll loose it.

Don't forget to link your ancestry tree to you DNA results - that way you get better matches.

Thankyou Flip for your help.

You're welcome.

Once you've done that and uploaded/linked your tree on ancestry you may want to consider exporting your ancestry DNA results and uploading to MyHeritage - they seem to come up with even more DNA matches (or they have done for me).

If you need help in doing this just come back to this thread and I or another member will explain how to do it. But it's best to take one step at a time - get your ancestry tree sorted first.

Hi Flip
I use an IPAD. After uploading my tree as a gedcom I was asked where I wanted to save it. I saved it in PAGES but couldn’t upload it to Ancestry from there. I guess I can’t upload from apple. Does it have to be uploaded as a word document?
Thankyou

Just as Excel is for numbers, Gedcom is for family history. It has to be uploaded in that format.

Someone else has said they can't up load things from an ipad. May be its just the device rather than the programme

I agree with Det, you need to save and upload the GEDCOM in it's original raw data format - but I really can't say whether this is possible from an ipad as I tend to use my laptop for saving and subsequently uploading files.

If you don't have a laptop you could consider going to your local library and doing it from there as many of them have free internet access. Not sure if this is the case in your area though. Alternatively find a friend with a laptop/PC willing to let you use it. Then access your e-mail from there and follow the previously sent instructions after saving the file to their computer.

Hi Flip (or anyone)
When you advised miffed 'NEVER click on import gedcom on your GR tree, anything imported will overwrite your tree and you'll lose it'. Can I upload a tree now (for the first time) and then when I have more added to my home tree, not on GR, can I upload it to GR and it will add or override to my original tree?
many thanks
Carmel

Carmel - yes and yes.

Yes you can upload a gedcom. If I remember rightly, GR automatically begins a tree for a new subscriber with just their own name. Once you upload a gedcom, that will be replaced.

When ever you upload a gedcom, it will overwrite what ever tree you have on this site.

At one time GR had plans to allow members to have numerous trees on one account. That was dropped. You can have more trees if you open accounts with different email addresses. You could maintain them as a ‘free’ member.

If you use credits to view records on this site, you’ll only have access to them for a specific period. We suggest you download anything new to you, to your own device then, if required, upload them to your keepsafe. That way you’ll always have access.
