Differences - GRO birth index and freeBMD index.

I am aware that there are differences between the two, my question is how one can trace a child that appears on the freeBMD index, but does not appear on the GRO index under that name. In the case of Wiiliam Toin b 1859 Boston Lincolnshire, I have searched under variants spellings such as Toyn, Toyne, Toine without any joy. Searching the GRO index of course requires the surname to be entered, so the fact that I have a vol & page no from freeBMD does help. Any suggestions for ways of finding births when they don't appear as they do on the freeBMD index?

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1859 (>99%)
TOIN William Boston 7a 346

Also available on FMP, but can't reproduce here - another phone call to FMP !!

Not seeing on GRO but it's not the only one of Q1 1859 7A 346 (as per freebmd) missing from GRO index, but some are there.

Have also come across missing names on the GRO index. There is a facility for you to report it to GRO.

Like anything else, transcribing a record from one place to another is open to mistakes.

the gro index doesnt require the mmn it will show it on the entry it pulls up

have you checked the actual page on freebmd to see if it been transcribed correctly

Hi Shirley, yes the name appears as Toin on the handwritten page. I am aware that you don't need to include MMN, in this case I can't as I don't know it, trying to find that info was my reason for going to the GRO index.

I have found the scan of the marriage register for William, he gives his father as William, which doesn't fit with the census data above. William wasn't with his parents in 1871 but is described as the nephew of William Barton, living with him and his wife Eliza in Boston. I am curious as to who his parents were and perhaps getting a line on why he was with William and Eliza.

On Ancestry, the image of the 1861 posted above by GG, has pages missing.

The image consists of only two pages, for everyone on the transcription except Matkin [Matthew] , Ann, and Mary..

Page 1 of the transcription is the Description of Enumeration District, then page 2 starts with the daughter Jane.

EDIT:
The full 7 pages of image show up for Matkin, Ann and Mary, but only the first and last pages of the seven for everyone else on the transcription.

Had to pop out, ChrisH I believe you have found a right piece of the puzzle with the first marriage above. It seems likely that Eliza Barton who married Willian Toyn snr is related to William Barton with whom William Toyn jnr resided. The William Barton with whom William jnr lived married Eliza Haylock and I have the marriage record concerned. Now for some digging to see if my theory is correct.

Julie

Julie Report 8 Aug 2019 17:38

I believe the matter of William Toyn's parentage and why he might have been with William and Eliza Barton nee Haylock is resolved. His parents were I think William Toyn and Eliza Barton, as in the marriage found above. I have located the 1861 census for William & Eliza Toyn with William jnr included at Toynton All Saints (I can only think the surname Toyn must have some connection). Although the place of birth for William jnr is show as Toynton rather than Boston, I also found an 1841 census with William Barton snr and family, including William Barton jnr (too many William's here) and Eliza Barton as children, in Boston. A further link is that both William Barton jnr and Eliza Haylock are shown as resident in Toynton All Saints when they married. Eliza Toyn nee Barton died in 1864 & is buried at Langrick, where husband William married again in 1867. Seems likely that childless William & Eliza Barton agreed to take in the young William Toyn following the death of his mother, and he did not return to live with his father & step-mother.
