Flip,
I bet there were quite a few, who didn't give correct information, but maybe some didn't even know, if the stepfather had been in their life so long.
One never knows, what will be found on those certificates.
Sometimes they pose as many questions as they answer.

A distant relative was 9 and with her father and family in 1891, then in service in 1901.

I lost track of her after that, but after help from these boards, I found her marriage, in a completely different surname.
She was born illegitimate, so was registered with her mother's surname, but in 1891 and 1901 was shown with her father's surname.

Her mother died in childbirth, so the birth was registered by her father, but the child was illegitimate, so was registered with her mother's surname and he was not named in the father's column, but the informant column shows his name and 'father'.
Research found that when she married, father was 'unknown' even though she had lived with him as a child.
I'm left wondering why one certificate clearly names the girl's father yet on marriage he is 'unknown'.

My grandmother was illigimate and did exactly the same, married under her original name even though showing under her mothers married name in 1901. She also named her stepfather as father, who the transcribers assumed was the same surname as her.

Thank you Choccy.... that ties with what I was suspecting when I couldn't find a suitable marriage for an Arthur Skerrett.

Interesting that she married as Skerrett and not HUDD, but used her stepfather's forename to save face.

Rose Isabella SKERRETT (25 ) married in Bristol in 1906.
Her father is shown as Arthur, a miner.
(image on Ancestry )
Please could someone help find them in 1891 to find Arthur's origins.?

At Rose's marriage, the groom's father is shown as deceased, but Arthur is not shown that way suggesting he is alive at that time, although he was not a witness, so nothing is definite.
