ArgyllGran Report 2 Nov 2019 16:50

Pure conjecture -

Maybe he was Annie's son, but not by Fred, and her infidelity might have been the reason for the break-up of the marriage.
If she said she was single, that would result in his birth being registered as Pearson with no mms.

Or maybe he was Fred's son, but born after the break-up, with Annie claiming to be single when she registered the birth.

Maybe Annie had scarpered after his birth, or was with a new partner who didn't want the baby, and Fred either wasn't interested or couldn't cope with a baby.

He obviously accepted Kenneth at some point, as they're together in 1939.

As I said - conjecture!

However, there may be some link to your Annie Knaggs.

Her father John was born John Sigsworth Knaggs, and married Sarah Carter:

John Sigsworth Knaggs
in the England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1988
Name: John Sigsworth Knaggs
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Birth Date: abt 1850
Marriage Date: 25 Dec 1871
Marriage Place: Rillington, Yorkshire, England
Spouse: Sarah Carter

Annie's birth again, with mms:

KNAGGS, ANNIE mms CARTER
GRO Reference: 1875 D Quarter in MALTON UNION Volume 09D Page 368

I think Robert Sedgwick Knaggs in 1911 is the same person as John Sigsworth Knaggs - both born 1851 in Weaverthorpe, both builder-related occupations.

There's no sign of "Robert" 's birth (nor of him in any other census), but there is John's:

Births Dec 1850 (>99%)
Knaggs John Ligsworth Driffield 23 56
Knaggs John Sigsworth Driffield 23 56

BUT that doesn't help find Annie Knaggs (and hopefully Charles) in 1911.

His father Fred's army record says Fred is married but separated by 1917.

No children are listed.

Fred Pearson Self (Head)
Annie Knaggs Spouse

By 1939 Fred's in Bradford, with a new partner, Charlotte, but doesn't appear to have married her.
Has a son Kenneth (18 May 1910, married) and a daughter-in-law Margaret.

No mms for the son Kenneth:

PEARSON, KENNETH -
GRO Reference: 1910 J Quarter in MIDDLESBROUGH Volume 09D Page 570

If Annie remarried (or at least had a new relationship if she remained married to Fred) after she and Fred separated, Charles may have taken her new partner's surname.

ArgyllGran Report 1 Nov 2019 23:26

Unfortunately there were 15 Charles Pearsons (with no middle initial) born in England/Wales 1899-1901, as well as lots with middle names.

If Charles Lawrence's middle initial happens not to be included in a record, we can't tell if it's him or one of the other Charles Pearsons.

And if no age is given, even if the middle initial is there, we don't know if it's him or one of several other Charles Laurence/Lawrence or Charles L Pearsons.
