That's true but the Chasteauneuf family seem to have been quite established in Woolwich so it may have brought some money into the family. I can't find a second marriage for Theresa or indeed any marriage at all for Elizabeth. Winifred May's birth was registered in September qtr of 1898. I wonder if Elizabeth had entered the Workhouse in July 1898 because she was pregnant.

Her stay in the infirmary would fit this birth, which I think has been posted before:

Wow that's not great. Is there any mention of her youngest sister Theresa Ann (born Woolwich 1878) or her mother Margaret Burnside (born Ireland 1840)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 25 Nov 2019 20:43

It's not an army record, Ian.
It's a workhouse discharge record.

Here's her admission record:

Elizth Burnside
in the London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1764-1930
Name: Elizth Burnside
Admission Age: 25
Record Type: Admission
Birth Date: 1873
Admission Date: 7 Jul 1898
Admission Place: Greenwich, Woolwich, London, England

She was discharged at her own request. It doesn't say she was in the infirmary, but as she was only there for one day, that may be the case.

I think this is her:

Elizabeth Burnside
in the 1901 England Census
Name: Elizabeth Burnside
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation to Head: Froner [Ironer]
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Ireland
Civil Parish: Kidbrooke
Ecclesiastical parish: St James Kidbrooke
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street address:
Registration district: Woolwich
Sub-registration district: Charlton
ED, institution, or vessel: Brook Hospital

I think her occupation says "Collar ironer, hospital" - though "collar" has been scored out.

She's single.

Elizabeth Burnside was certainly born in 1873 when John was stationed just outside Dublin but this is strange. I wonder if she worked for the army is some capacity. We do know she was employed as an hospital ironer alongside her sister Theresa during the 1901 census. I wonder if the army employed her as a nurse or auxillary.

Ian Report 25 Nov 2019 19:17

Lucy Flannery was certainly born c1805 if we are to accept the 1871 census. After that she disappears..

Don't know if relevant -

Lucy Flannery was born c1805 in Ireland, per the 1871 census, and Margaret Ryan was born in Co Tipperary.

Her mother could have re-married.

Although.............is this her death?

Perhaps Flannery was her maiden name?

Just tossing ideas around..................

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 25 Nov 2019 16:53

According to 1871 census John was born in Ireland c1819 - age 52.

But looking at the image, it could well be 32, which would certainly be a lot nearer Margaret's age.

That would make his birth c1839, so this would be his death:

Deaths Jun 1878 (>99%)
BURNSIDE John 40 Woolwich 1d 623

Margaret was a widow in 1881 census.

ADDED:
In fact, there is a note added to the Regimental record of son John (Angus)'s birth, to say "Gr Burnside died at Woolwich 24/4/78."

Thanks for info off ancestry. The witnesses are interesting. I wonder who W.Burnside is? Could he have a brother in the army perhaps? . I don't know of any link with a Murray.

ArgyllGran

I don't see any military record for him on Ancestry.
