If I was looking for some information on a possible French relative born c1950 (in france) how would I go about it please?

French records are not held centrally. You would have to know the Departement at least

Try googling for info about how and where to apply

You might get some leads from this magazine (in French):
La Revue Française de Généalogie
At one time they had a "read an old copy for free" offer which might still be the case.
i also recall reading a recent article in one of the UK magazines about someone who had had great success with a French genealogy site. Might be worth browsing in your library?
