I'd like to second Erika's comment: the greatest value GR offers is the community, the volunteer who pitch in and help.
Thank you all!

What tree are you wanting to download

You can’t download someone else’s tree

Both Ancestry and FindMyPast offer a 14-day free trial.

Just be careful (if you decide not to proceed with a sub ) to cancel the free trial before the end of the 14 days, or they will take a subscription automatically.

GR is handy for compiling and storing one's tree, but its MAIN benefit is the help given by the members to each other.

As to which site you should use - the only answer is to look at what they have to offer, and decide which of them is best suited to your needs.

You'll have to export your tree from Ancestry in the form of a GEDCOM file, and then upload it to GR.

Instructions on how to export from Ancestry here:

https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Uploading-and-Downloading-Trees

and how to import to GR:

https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/help/faqs?key=448&searchterm=gedcom

Be aware that when you upload a GEDCOM to a tree, it will overwrite anything already on that tree (ie - if you already have a GR tree) - permanently.

Re GR versus Ancestry -
none of the helpers here use GR for researching records.
Ancestry or FindMyPast are much better for research, with the addition of FamilySearch (free), FreeBMD (free), and others such as ScotlandsPeople for Scottish records, or irishgenealogy.ie for Irish ones - to name but a few.

But many of us do have our trees on GR - and often on other sites/programmes as well.

Hi there,

I've been using GR for some time now and find it an easy site to use. I've also recently taken an Ancestry DNA test and uploaded a tree on that site for the results etc. Ancestry is much more of a financial outlay however and I wonder - can I download the tree info from Ancestry and export it to GR? It's either that or I go to Ancestry full-time and export from GR to Ancestry!

I'm not new to genealogy but new to the more technical aspects of the sites! :-D

Many thanks
