Re the wrong age given in 1911 -

probably just a mistake. George Clowes filled in the form - maybe he wasn't sure of her age.

Welcome to the boards, Richard.

All inmates of a workhouse are listed on a census - though there's always the possibility of someone being missed out by mistake.

Have you tried alternative spellings of her name?

She may not have been an inmate as such, as workhouses were used as hospitals too, so her mother may only have been there long enough to give birth.

If you like to give us her name, we can have a look.

Her birth cert will tell you exactly where she was born.

Richard

Richard Report 15 Nov 2020 17:03

My nana born 1894 is listed on the 1911 census as a "boarder" aged 19 ( actually 17 so was there a reason for that?? ) in the household presumably of friends or acquaintances -- household head witnessed her marriage in 1911 -- but is nowhere to be found 10 years previously in 1901. She may have been born in the Leek workhouse. Would workhouse census returns list all the children in their care? Or were they exempt / overlooked / ignored ?
