Thomas Dale Russell married Annie Evans in Edinburgh and that is where he and Annie’s four children were born.

Annie was Thomas’ second wife and he was almost 50 when his youngest child was born.

I will check the Russell side as well just in case. Any aunt of my father in law could in theory have been almost 60 when he was born.

ArgyllGran Report 15 Jan 2021 14:57

IF Dolly was indeed an aunt of your father-in-law, perhaps she was from the Russell side of the family?

For example, IF the name Dolly bore any relation to her real name, there was a Euphemia Dorothy Russell born in Edinburgh in 1900, a Doris Margaret in 1903, a Doris Muriel in 1911, a Dolina in 1923, a Dorothy in 1923, a Dolina in 1925, a Dorothy in 1928.

EDIT:
Though maybe Edinburgh is a red herring, as Thomas Dale Russell was born in Dumbarton, in 1902. No female Russells with a Dolly-type name born in Dumbarton.

You might have to delve further back into the Russells - a great-aunt??

I’ll see what I can find on the cousin.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Jan 2021 13:59

Perhaps it would be useful to research the newly-found 'cousin'

Tawny

Tawny Report 15 Jan 2021 13:33

Thank you all for the information.

My father in law is the youngest of Annie’s children. He has decided at the age of 70 after randomly meeting a man at the funny handshake club who is most likely a cousin that he wants to trace the family tree.

Father in law can’t tell me much and his older siblings either can’t or won’t tell him much.

Yesterday father in law spoke to his sister Pam and she said there was an Aunt Dolly so if she wasn’t family it sounds like none of them were aware of that fact but it is entirely possible.

I've edited my previous post re the 1916 birth of Marion Gwyndolyn - not the same family - her parents were Owen and Louise.

I knew a lady who was called Dolly.
I have seen a copy of her son's marriage certificate ( in NZ) where she was named as Dorothy,(with correct maiden name ) probably because that was presumed to be her 'correct' name.

She was in fact Sarah Jane.

I remember that similar thread, ErikaH.

Not the same family, though.

No solution was found.

There was a very similar query on here quite recently................

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Jan 2021 11:43

Do you know when the family moved to Edinburgh?

It appears from ERs that they were there by 1920:

Victor R Evans
in the Edinburgh, Scotland, Electoral Registers, 1832-1966
Name: Victor R Evans
Residence Date: 1920-1921
Street Address: Cluny Place 17 A
Residence Place: Edinburgh, Scotland

Cluny Place is in the Morningside area.

Just posting as a long shot -
there is this birth in the Morningside RD:

EVANS
MARION GWYNDOLY[n]
F
1916
685/4 383
St Giles

EVANS
MARION GWYNDOLY[n]

EDIT:

NO, not her.
I've had a look, and her parents were Owen and Louise.

The father's birth?

EVANS

and his marriage - for date:

EVANS
VICTOR REGINALD

In 1911:

So whoever Dolly was, she wasn't in that family in 1911.

I'm inclined to agree with Kath and ErikaH.
"Dolly" may only have been a family friend, and her name may bear no relation to "Dolly" if that was just her "pet" name.

The only child with the parents on 1911 census is Victor jnr

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Jan 2021 09:13

Is it 100% proven that this person was a child of the parents whose names you have posted? Just checking - as it was commonplace for unrelated close family friends to be called ‘aunt’ by children by way of showing affection and out of politeness

Tawny

Tawny Report 14 Jan 2021 23:08

I was told she married someone called Mort. All the children were born in Scotland. Sydney died in WW2.

The ones I have found were all born in Old or West Kilpatrick and ended up in Edinburgh.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 14 Jan 2021 22:52

Were all the children born in Scotland ?

Did ‘Dolly’ marry? Where did she die?
