To contact the owner of the GR tree which ErikaH mentions -

go to "Search all member trees", under "Search" at top right of this page, and enter his name , year of birth, and birthplace.

You'll see two results - one is your own tree, and other is the person to contact.
Click on "Find out more" beside the person's name and send your very careful and tactful message..

Dennis Smith b. Birmingham 1938 is in a GR tree..........get in touch with the 'owner' with a very carefully-worded message. Don't mention that you think he's your father ..................this sort of situation can be very upsetting

The 1976 marriage fits with the name Joan given by Melody Joy in her "Find Ancestors" thread.

On the sweeping assumption that he lived all his life in Birmingham (based on the above death) there's a marriage in 1957 , and also either a remarriage - or else a marriage for a completely different Dennis T Smith - in 1976, to a woman using the surname Smith as well as (presumably) her maiden name .

Thanks Shirley.

I can’t c & p from my IPad, otherwise I would have put the link on. Better to make that post than ignore the double posting.

Melody
You need a copy of his birth cert. Unfortunately, the surnames are too common to pinpoint possible parents for Dennis
