If you give some more details helpers can perhaps find the correct person.

Who was your Gt Grandfather - when and where was he born, please give as much info as you can. Are you sure this is your ancestor.

Have you found him on census - details please

What details does the certificate you have give - names, ages, place, occupations, witness names etc

The GRO won’t be able to help

The info on any certificate is at it’s given to the local registrar or church record of a marriage

have you looked for the man’s baptism to find out what name he was given by his parents?

I assume you are 100% certain that the marriage cert is for your proven direct ancestor?

I have known all manner of mistakes on certificates, but the man may have used a different name, at that time.

Where was the marriage so that other members can possibly check for a parish record ?

The certificate I received (11 years ago!) gives my 2nd Great Grandfather's name as George Dunn - Chainmaker - but all subsequent research strongly suggests that he was Joseph Dunn - Chainmaker. The certificate was issued in 1843 and both participants were widowed. Has anyone experience or knowledge of names being incorrectly entered during that period? I have sent a query off to the GRO but don't hold up much hope of them resolving the matter.
