On FMP, I have the death of Mabel Mary Elizabeth Percy
B 1894 8 Dec
D 1980 12 Apr
M 1934 Horace Percy(1st cousin once removed)
D 1947
When her death is shown it gives details of her probate as
Probate date 7 Jul 1980

But when I go on Gov.uk to order a copy of this, it says O results found?

Why doesn't it show up please?

You are right Florence. The probate shows up on Findmypast but doesn't show up on the Probate Search website for some reason.

Not sure what you can do really.

Well, I found her probate record on the GRO site by entering the first name John (there has to be a John Percy died 1980 surely.)

One came up and after the usual problem of the probate pages opening at A, a quick scroll forwards got me to John.

Below his is Mabel's record.

I went through the order process for John and he popped into my basket.

Same with Norma on the same results page.

I tried again with Mabel but the site is not recognising her name for search results or ordering purposes.

Maybe try using the Feedback option on the site?

I experimented with ordering Mabel's probate record (finding the details via John's, as above).

And it's in my basket - even though the site says no results found.

Mabel's brother was John Walter Francis Percy. he was born in 1908 and died in 1986. His probate was 17 oct 1986. it shows his estate was not more than 40k.

If I remember correctly, when Mabel died there was a huge falling out between my grandad(Joseph) and his brother John who was dealing with Mabel's affairs. Mabel never had children but very sure she did own a house.

Eventually grandad washed his hands of the whole business and left john to deal with the estate. But where it went and who got what is another matter?

Hence I would like to see the probate and the will out of curiosity.

Thanks for your help ladies

The value of the woman’s Estate was under £15k, according to the Probate record

Her marriage to Horace was in 1934. He died in 1947. His effects were valued at less than £600

Depending on where she was living the ( less than) £15k could have included the value of her house in 1980.
Added: the average UK house price in 1980 was just over £19k.

Florence61 Report 27 May 2023 15:51

She lived in quite a cheap area of Dudley in a terraced 2 bed house. Quite possibly worth about £15k at the time in that area.

Erika, how did you find that detail please?

Would there have been a will?

Probate is a legal procedure for Proving the validity of a Will

The value of the estate is on the Probate record, as I said ;-). On FMP

Address at death 19 Hellier Street, Dudley, Worcs

Yes I know, but i'm unable to order a copy of the probate as it doesn't show on Gov.uk as per Argyllgran and greyghost already said, so not sure what I can do?

The probate ref no is on the record on FMP. Try contacting Gov UK direct quoting the ref number.
It’s their site - they are the ones who should be able to resolve your query

Ah ok ty will try that

ArgyllGran Report 28 May 2023 09:45

As I said - I was able to get a copy of Mabel's probate in my "basket" on the gov.uk site.

Search initially for JOHN Percy, DOD 1980.
No need to enter anything on the second page of search.details.
Click "Save and continue"
Scroll through the resulting 41 pages of "Image search results" until you come to the surname Percy, on page 30, where you can see the details for Mabel.
Enter those details on the order form on the right side of the page - name, DOD, date of probate, registry location (London).
Click "Add to basket".
Click on "My basket" in small print at the top of the page.
Log in, if not already done.
Pay.

Just thought I would share what I discovered in my Gr Aunts will.

She apparently left the property to one of her brothers but not the other! So I can now fully understand why they fell out.

Just thought I would share that with you all.

Bet you are now itching to know why Mabel did that.
