Doe's anyone have access to the 1901 census online now owned by GR, the reason I'm asking is last year I subscribed to 1901 census online and viewed an image of my great grandfather Ernest Paramore, it said he was on the vessell 'Ophir' after losing the file I saved it to, I had to find it again, this time I went through Ancestry as i am a subscriber, only to find he is listed as crew of HMS Ocean. If someone has access to this 1901 census online, could they please have a look and see what ship it says, many thanks ERNEST PARAMORE B.1883 BRIDGWATER SOMERSET Regards Michelle

On the government 1901 site, the Ernest Paramore you seem to be referring to is age 18 but born Stapehill, Gloucestershire. What did the ancestry census entry say - or what folio/page of piece 5328 is he?

As you say ancestry have him on Ocean not Ophir. If no one has any credits for the government 1901, I suppose the only way is for you to go right through the images for Ophir to be sure he's not on her. Ophir starts at rg13/5328 f 115 p1 !!!! UPDATE !!!!1 The thing is - on census night Ocean was a battleship in Hong Kong, whereas Ophir was the royal yacht in the Suez Canal en route to Australia. Does that help??

Thanks jools, I've already trolled through the crew members of the Ophir and Ernest wasn't on it, very disappointed to find out he wasn't on that ship even bought my mother the book on the 'Ophir' 1901 for christmas (it's her grandfather) she'll be upset. Can only think whoever catalogued the crew list put it to the wrong ship, I guess it doe's pay to double check!!! Thanks again for your help Michelle:)

Hello, S -

Is this old query yours? Did any of the links given there help? (Presumably not, or you wouldn't be asking here.)

http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/archive/index.php?t-18954.html

EDIT:
Sorry, Su - I thought you might be the Sinclair who posted that, but maybe you're not.

Another link which might help - though probably not for 1911 (per your other thread posted above):

https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/

You can do an initial search free, then need a sub to look at the details.

And another:

but you can get a 14 day free trial.

Thanks, DetEcTive - and for copying over to the other thread.

I realised S had added to Michelle's thread - I had thought maybe the S was for Sinclair, as in the shipsnostalgia link.

Ophir was initially RMS (Royal Mail Ship)

See Wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Ophir

Edit/Added
Harry Price 1877-1965 mentioned in Wiki shows that HMY Ophir was at Suez 01Apr1901 and at Aden 05Apr1901. Not sure if it was only ships in Home Waters that were required to complete a census return?
One of my greatuncles was on HMS Duke of Wellington in 1901 and HMY Alexandra in 1911. At both dates the ships were at Portsmouth.

S.
Likely that the RN archivists at Portsmouth could assist.

Further Edit.
Have you not tried the National Archives? For a few pounds you should be able to obtain his service record.
