Hi. My g grandad was born in Dec 1909 and i have looked until 1912 and there is still no birth registered. How long were they allowed to leave it before it had to be registered? |

It certainly was'nt 3 years, If Im remembering correctly I believe it is upto 6 weeks from the actual birth! If it was a later December birth he may not have been registered untill Jan/Feb making the registration year 1910 Are you sure your looking in the correct area??? Lib |

Hi, ive been looking on 1837. If anyone could double check i would be really greatful. Its James Francis Hanley born 3rd December 1909 in the Liverpool area we think. |

Agreed there are no reg's for anyone with those two firstnames. Maybe he didn't have both fornames at birth, or maybe he was reg'd as ''male'' rather than with a first name (not a common occurrence at that date). Do you have his marriage cert with father's name/occupation? Merry |

Hi No the only thing i have is of my nans birth cert which says James Francis Hanley. I cant get his marriage cert as he married in jersey and i have this really awful feeling he was born in Ireland (my nan thinks there is a Liverpool/Irish connection) Is it likely that 1837 would transcribe something incorrect? We def dont think his name was changed thanks for looking though |

Robyne The GRO merely put in their indexes what appears on the cert. Its possible that the cert says Hanley but has been misread. It's also possible that the cert says Hannan although the informant said Hanley. I have several certs with mistakes on them. It's also possible that the name was Hannan to start with and has been changed to Hanley - I have recently got a cert for someone known as Charles Carter all his life who was registered as Charles McCarthy - and HE didn't know that, because he was unable to get a birth cert from the GRO when he applied. I know you don't want to waste money on this cert if its dud, but I would risk the £3 and ask the GRO to send it, providing you've got some other checking point. nell |

Robyne I wouldn't be so sure its not Hannen, my rellies couldn't read or write and so they just said their names and the officials wrote down what they heard. This is my list of possible surnames so far: 1886 marriage certificate (wifes name)- McQue 1891 census (sis-in-law living with family)- Mckew 1892 birth certificate (mothers maiden name)- McHugh All certificates are 'x' the mark of ..... Not wishing to appear rude but the Irish/Scouse accent might have caused them to write it down wrong. Have you tried ringing or writing the Liverpool/West Derby Records office and seeing if some kind soul will look for you seeing as you know his date of birth. Rachel |

that all sounds very plausible, perhaps i will order the cert and hope that it is the right one. He died in the 2nd Q of 1970 in Winchester |
