John SMITH Generation 1 John SMITH from the Willson’s Party of 1820 Settlers on the Belle Alliance, and Rebecca HANCORN. He was a Boatswain for Lord Nelson in the British Royal Navy. Settler entry: Smith, John (42)Rebecca (34)John Hancorn (15)Thomas William (8)William (4)Boatswain, Royal Navy John SMITH was born in 1778. He died in 1857 at Assegai Bosch. Although formerly a boatswain for the Royal Navy, he farmed at Assegai Bosch until his death. Rebecca HANCORN, born Westminister. Parents; John HANCORN and Rebecca. He acquired Melville Park in 1841 from James WARD. At the time of his youngest son’s baptism, he is described as Field Cornet, Grahamstown . Mary Anne STRINGFELLOW, born circa 1817 in England, arrived at the Cape in Bailie's party of 1820 Settlers, died 16 November 1871 at De Beer's New Rush, Kimberley. Fanny died 18 May 1961, Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia. Although baptised by the names given, she was later known as Florence Augusta Matilda. She arrived in Bulawayo by coach, in 1896, and was in the laager at Bulawayo during the Matabele Rebellion of that year. 1.5.8 Ella Minnie Hancorn SMITH born 24 Jun 1886, Assegai River, baptised 6 Oct 1889, Grahamstown Anglican. 1.5.9 Effie Victoria Hancorn SMITH born 18 Nov 1887, Assegai River, baptised 6 Oct 1889, Grahamstown Anglican. 1.5.10 Stella SMITH born 24 Jun 1890, died 1 Mar 1968, Emsworth, Hampshire. After her parents' death in 1893, she was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Colonel Edward LYONS, R.A. and Mrs. Alice LYONS. She was with them during the siege of Kimberley and was later educated in Belgium, serving in the Red Cross there at the start of World War I.
