In the 1881 and 1891 census it says that my g.g.grandfather was born in France in 1855. His parents were both Irish, and all his younger siblings were born in Liverpool. They would have been a very working class family so does anyone have any ideas what they were doing in France? Also any info about his birth, would it still have been registered in France, although he was a british citizen?

May have been in an army, I think they sometimes took families with them. Or maybe servants of a wealthy family who required them to travel with them

Diane, I have had a somewhat similar problem with my Gt Grandpa reg in the 1118 census as born on Germany 1848. So far I have not been able to find out when he arrived in the Uk but he was a stream engine fitter and married in Darlington so was presumably something to do with the railways. Perhaps your Gt Gt Gt grandpa's occupation would give a clue as to why he was in France just then. Also try "francegenweb" (if your French is good enough). The Public Record Office has some general information on Birth registations , though not sure if this cover UK citizens born abroad. And possibly the Anglo-French Family History soc.

Thanks to you both. His fathers occupation is just down as labourer!
