Cassandra Not much online info on BMDs (except Cheshire FHS site at cheshirebmd.org.uk) Other counties like Lancashire and Staffordshire are following suite and putting their own BMDs online but as they are being done by volunteers and it it a long task you just have to keep looking as more is added. Routine for checking on a death is - if you know the year when he was last alive start looking at the indexes and start searching back in time. Afraid there is no easy way yet. The reference number on the index refers to the area where the death was registered and is only used by the Office of National Statistics (ONS)in Southport. Where the person died may not be their home address as they could have died in a hospital which is not in the same area as the one they lived in. Confusing sometimes. My grandfather lived in Cheshire but on the index his death was registered in Shropshire as he died in a TB hospital nrear Market Drayton. It was only because he had an unusual name that I knew it was the same person and the certificate I sent for proved it. Hope this helps.
