Man and women of the British Army were given awards by our allies. Many awards given to personnel of the British Army were announced in the London Gazette. However, a significant number of awards, especially those given to other ranks were not announced in the London Gazette.

Records concerning foreign awards given to Britons can be found in WO 388, which lists by bestowing country and London Gazette date, the names of those individuals who received such awards as the Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honours. The records in WO388 also list a number of awards which were not announced in the London Gazette, especially those given in the early months of the ward.

WO 388 is available on microfilm at the National Archives.

I've been told that my husband's grandfather was awarded the Croix de Guerre in WW1 for risking his life to save a French officer. Is there anywhere a definitive list of English recipients where I might be able to verify this please?
