It is very unlikely that there is anything on the market which will have even the slightest effect on killing the stump.

All garden chemicals which had even the slightest toxicity were banned by Mr Blair's government a few years ago. It is even illegal to have a can of creosote in your shed these days.

pruning is ok, but DRASTIC pruning may be frowned upon,
My daughter in Kirklees had to get permission to have a tree felled......was half dead anyway...and was in danger of damaging the house if it fell on its own...Bob

An army friend did offer some assistance along those lines, but I only want rid of the tree not the whole housing estate!!

Might be the only option left though soon!!

Basically you have to be aware of tree preservation orders and conservation areas. You can be fined up to £20k if you chop down a tree in such an area without permission.

A tree is generally defined as being a plant with one trunk.

I've C&P Kitty's link which directed me to my own council, but I can't see anything relevant on their website.

Obviously I daren't phone them and ask now.

Diane stop panicking you are probably fine.
And if a preservation order had been granted at some point in the past they would have had to inform you anyway.

Thank goodness for that Errol. No notices of preservation orders have been received. Problem is we have a woman next door who is of the bovine persuasion and her phone would be red hot if she knows about it.
