On what Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury says about sharia law seeming to be unavoidable in the UK?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7232661.stm

Myself I think there should be one law for EVERYONE regardless. What do you think?

*choke*

I have seen Sharia law working in domestic cases and it seems admirable but it depends how far the advocates want to pursue this.
I cannot imagine the full extent of punishments allowed for would be tolerated.
Given that how would you set in stone the limits the Sharia courts had.

Scares me rigid!

Hiya Muffy.... hi all,

I'm all debated out today..... so will leave you with this link to have a look at!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7235615.stm

So..... according to some Muslims, the interpretation of Sharia law differs probably from one person to the next....

For me, I would prefer to keep our laws as they are, and know that they will evolve naturally, as they have for hundreds of years! And to know that they will be relevant to everyone who lives in this country.

I wouldn't mind betting though, that tucked amongst the Sharia Laws are laws similar to Old Testament Biblical laws.

And the Ten Commandments......... I know these are rules of conduct really... but pretty good ones for people to live by no matter where they are from, what religion (if any) they practice.

Initially when this debate first came about, the archbishop said in an interview, that he wasn't about to ask for the introduction of Sharia law into this country, as a separate law for Muslims, but for our own lawmakers, when pushing forward for new legislation, to take into account Sharia law. Is he not saying that still?

Hard to know where he stands on it now TW ...... after his speech he seems to have gone down the *taken out of context* route. His fellow churchmen though don't see it like that at all and read it the same way as many others judging from their reactions to it xx

MrDaff Report 18 Jul 2008 17:26

Teresa, Muffy's link was to the original news report back in February, so I don't think anything has changed!

Laws will evolve to suit the people using them.... I think when the term *Sharia Law* is used we immediately think of (dis)honour murders, hangings, floggings, stonings.... even of young rape victims as *they must have brought this upon themselves by an action of their own*.

We also think of forced marriages (as opposed to arranged marriages, which are a bit different) of children born in this country and being married off at 13 or 14 whilst on holiday in their parent's homeland.

But not all Sharia law is like this.... if our laws do evolve, let us hope that we have the best bits.

I think the law was made for the country as in everyone in it abides by it. I disagree with overseas elements being placed within the law ... spoken in a different language and slowly taking away England's credibility to make the country safe and law abiding.

Nope I would never agree to it.

just my own opinion on the subject.

Gill.....I don't know much about Sharia Law, but surely only elements of it would be brought in to work alongside our existing laws................so I don't really see how it would take away "England's credibility to make the country safe and law abiding"

I think it will.........it's just something I feel about this, perhaps it was because I watched that awful docu video where a young 8 year old was caught steaking a sweet....it took all those grown men to keep him in place while a jeep ran over his arm and crushed it..so he couldn't do it again. I cried then and I cry now thinking of that little boys face.

Our laws are for all in the country if people don't like them perhaps they should live elsewhere.

sorry it just upsets me

Do you really think that sort of extreme punishment would be allowed here?

I don't...............but maybe I am being naive.

I agree Joy, and do not think sharia law should be adopted in any way, just my opinion of course and NOT racist.

MrDaff Report 18 Jul 2008 17:57

Joy I think you might find that female circumcision has already been legislated against... I worked a number of years ago with a community group where this practice was the norm.... there has been an amendment to an existing law to combat it.... I also have to say some very very brave women who were victims were instrumental in bringing this about.

I do not wish Sharia law to be adopted, but I do feel that in a couple of hundred years time, some elements of it will be written into our legal system, just as it has been throughout the legal history of this Island!

Eldrick Report 18 Jul 2008 18:11

Interesting. As our laws are enacted by 'The Lords, spiritual and temporal' meaning the christian bishops in the house of lords....how could a bishop remain true to his faith (only one god) whilst assenting to a law apertaining to another faith......thereby acknowledging that there is another God who must be just as powerful......

But I have no doubt that they will prostitute themselves to show how tolerant they are. And to keep their positions of power.

There should be NO law in this country that bows to any religious sect, faith or following in any way. To create laws because of the 2000 years old ramblings of some itinerant scribes relating to a supernatural being - it absolutely beggars belief.

Just my opinion of course :-)
