Oh Blimey.......and I bet they are sat rotting away in some forest, just waiting for some idiot to play around with them........hadn't thought of that one Old Geezer....

I heard that they want America to help them out, but America will not go against Russia on this issue.....make a few noises perhaps, but George Bush is on his last term and he wants to go out a good guy, not being in the middle of another war....

....I hope.....

You just feel sorry for the general population, they are the ones that will suffer and not the leaders, they will be well out of it.

Gets a bit more political and clear when Sky said that Georgia had been having talks about running a gas pipeline through their territory from Turkey into Europe, thus bypassing the monopoly of Gas reserves held by Russia, they are asking more money for it and this is causing prices to go through the roof......Russia is doing everything in its power to stop the talks about this gas pipeline......

......so it isn't oil this time folks......it is gas.....

I feel sorry for China, spending all that money on staging the Olympics and on the opening day Russia invades Georgia which is a friend of America....

Oh dear .......

Sally Moonchild Report 8 Aug 2008 16:34

Nor it seems did I Ann......it seems the places that are in conflict are not a part of Georgia, and not a part of Russia either, but a sort of buffer between both.....

btw.....we had a really smashing form teacher all through my years from 11 to 15 and he was the Geograph master......so I paid attention......lol

I thought that Chechnya was near Azerbyjan (sp) an yet another little country that was part of the USSR......not too sure on this one.....but the Chechens involved were Muslim fundamentalists and a lot of them were woman who the Russians called the Black Widows, their husbands had been killed in the conflict between Russia and Chechnya and they took up arms against the Russians.....I'll go and have a look at my map.....

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 8 Aug 2008 16:23

isn't Georgia where the Chechen[sp] fighters come from? and if so, weren't they responsible for the Beslan massacre in that theatre?

Sally Moonchild

Sally Moonchild Report 8 Aug 2008 16:15

It gets worse Paul, because Georgia has its parts which are recognised as being free states, and then the rest is considered a part of Russia......so the whole situation is a bit of a muddle.....

.....I hope the Americans don't promise anything though......their forces are stretched to the limit now....

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 8 Aug 2008 16:11

and they call the Olympics the friendly games!!!! ha!

Thought Russia were now part of NATO?

Oh..they dont want Georgia to join the club...lol.

Sally Moonchild

Sally Moonchild Report 8 Aug 2008 15:58

lol Ann........and I like the bit about 'protecting Russian citizens'.......Georgia is such a small country with hardly any army to speak of against Russia's military might......

.....and the Russian citizens......well, these were Georgians who decided they would rather stay with Russia after the USSR split and were granted Russian citizenship....

It is all highly political and has been going on for yonks......Georgia having warm sea ports that Russia needs to get into the Med....

Georgia is pro West and has been visited by Bush and other Western leaders much to Putin's anger......and sorry to say, the Western nations are not going to go against Russia for the sake of Georgia....

.....talk about sabre rattling......they ought to put all the world leaders in the Olympics to sort it out.....

Whilst the Prime Minister of Georgia is in China watching his team at the opening ceremony......Russia has invaded Georgia with a considerable force....in order to 'protect Russian citizens.....

George Bush and Alexander Putin are also at the opening ceremony and are at the moment conducting talks on the continuing escalation of events in Georgia.......the problem is that America and Britain are interested in Georgia joining NATO, much to Russia's annoyance........this is breaking news on Sky at the moment.....
