Well you could try finding a matching death reference for the name of the birth refernce you have..if you find a mtch..you got something to go on! :)

I only started my tree about 2 weeks ago...and I truly knew nothing of my family..parents and aunts have all but passed away.. ive had not contact with my family since 86 when my father died....
i didnt even know some of my aunts and uncle names!..I certainly didnt even know my grandparents names !

But I have persevered..and with help from folks here..I have been amazed at what Ive been able to find..if the new link I have got yesterday works out..I shall about to be adding a possible 600 members to my tree!!.... WOW!!!

In just under 2 weeks!

Ladies of the Night usually refers to Prostitutes!

I have been trying to track down a ancestor of mine called Ann Walton - who was known in the family as the 'Black Sheep' because of her many men friends and who seems to have disappeared after the 1891 census.

I have periods when I give up but every now and then you come across a new bit of info that gets you going again.

I've been going thru a good spell recently, but still no sign of Ann/Nan/ ? and her men friends

Good luck

People do choose to be known by different names sometimes, ...both first and surnames. I guess they had their reasons and just because you found a birth doesn't necessarily mean that they were known by that name.

One of my ancestors was registered with one forname, christened with 2 different ones and died using just the first baptism name.
My mother in law goes by a name that bears no resemblance to her given name.
Maddening though when you think relatives are holding back on information, although again there might be some good reason for them not knowing after a certain time.
My uncle was 'lost' to the family for over 20 years until my cousin tracked him down.

Oh Becki , thats the whole point , the easy bits are .. er well easy , only after that do you really become a genealogist when you are searching for people missing , people who should be there in the next census , children who,s mothers where unmarried and disappear. ..
Thats what this is all about , not the easy bits but the bits in between that make our families history interesting .My opinion is its no good going back to the 17th century with just a list of names , thats easy, you should try to find out as much as you can about each persons life story.
Stuff private dectectives , if I ever needed help to trace someone the people on here would be my first choice..

Becki if it's information on your older relations that your family won't tell you, it normally means that there's a bit of scandal waiting for you to find

Have you looked at my thread 'The mystery of disappearing ancestors?' You are not alone by any means. But, as somebody said to me this week. Don't give up, have a break but don't ever give up.
