I have my Mum's mother's Dictionary & Encyclopedia, so I guess it's from around the 1920's...fascinating, as in the back it has world maps (many differences in borders now!) and of course all about the British Empire, ie the Pink bits of the world!!!

My brother and I used it when doing our homework. Besides that, all through life, whenever we didn't know what a word meant or how to spell it, my Mum would say "look it up in grandmas's dictionary". She would never tell us outright, because, she said, if she did that we would never learn it.
'tis true!!!!!

I have a book which was my cousin's and I guess was one of her school books as it has Portsmouth Education Committee ass the issuers. foreword written in 1921 it is The story of Portsmouth. Fascinating reading.

somewhere I have a prize book of my Mother's but I can't remember what it is called. In a top cupboard somewhere.

Oh dear, at least they did a bit for you and took you out to try the car.

Can't wait to get my house sorted, it will still be packed to the rafters but will be orderly chaos I hope. You will have to come and compare our hoarding traits then lol

Will try and send you the vid.
I have to go to bed earlier now, o.h. is going to be getting up just after 4.30 am till he gets organised with putting his bag on the luggage rack (can't remember what the thing is on the back of the bike that holds things - he doesn't want to ride with his backpack on - hope he doesn't lose his pack up lol)
He isn't sure how long it will take him to ride to work so wants to have lots of time, and maybe get a sit down before starting hence getting up lots earlier lol.

Well, not really. My elder one did quite a lot in the house for me, and today we were actually driven out in the new-ish car to look at the wild Solent. But only for a short time! Then 'baby' had to dash off, as usual.
I have just been looking at how many of my books belonged to my grandparents or in-laws. And you think you are a hoarder!! xx

I have my Mum's 'Complete Works of William Shakespeare' that she was given as a Wesleyan Sunday School prize in 1913.
I also constantly use a book from my Gran's house, 'The Modern Standard Dictionary and World Atlas'. Dates from about 1934 and it shows a large part of the world still coloured pink - the British Empire!

I have a Family Doctor book which I think is about 1920/30. The illnesses and their cures are hilarious. This was before the days of antibiotics.

Just googled and found this:

An etymological dictionary traces a word's development over time, giving historical examples to show changes.

I have some of the books my Mum was given as Sunday school prizes which would have been in 1920's. Sadly the Bible she got for good attendance was given to me to use for school and someone stole it from my locker - it never turned up.
I also have a book which I suppose was Mum's or a relatives, called the White Ladies of Worcester, it was the first grownup book I read I think - I was quite young when I read it but would read anything I could lay hands on. I also have a book, Every Woman's Enquire Within, which was also Mum's, I learned a lot about childbirth etc from that, used to sneak in and read it when Mum was out shopping, I was about 9 or 10 I think lol
Not sure what happened to the dictionaries I had, but they were yonks old and not very good for homework, they were too old and didn't have half the info I needed for school.

I was never allowed to ask what a word meant. Was always asked what I thought the Funk 'n Wagnell was for.It is a pair of dictionaries that came with a set of encyclopaedias called 'The World of the Children' and 'Junior Science' which were bought from a man at the door I believe.

My favourite book is an 1895 reprint of an 1875 American medical dictionary that I bought in a charity shop entitled 'The People's Common Sense Adviser'
It's absolutely fascinating, it was written by an R V Pearce MD and, of course, he advocates using 'Dr Pearce's Wonder Pills ' for everything!
There are testimonials throughout stating how his 'Wonder Pills' had cured them. Many of these testimonials have photographs of the cured patients - which is fascinating in itself.
The strangest 'complaint' amongst men was Spermatorreha - or masturbation - and he cured them!!

I found a WWII Household Management book in my grans house, with tips on cleaning using everyday things - I use some of the tips - saves buying nasty chemical cleaners.

A ' CHAMBERS TWENTIENTH CENTURY DICTIONARY'

I THINK IT CAME FROM A WELL TO DO HOUSE THAT EITHER MY MUM CLEANED OR MY GRAN.

THERE ARE SO MANY WORDS IN IT I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
IT'S DATED JUNE 12 1901.

IT'S A BIT OF A MESS NOW, BUT MY MUM USED IT TO HELP US WITH OUR HOMEWORK,

I BOUGHT MY DAUGHTER THE 'HOW CLEAN IS YOUR HOME' BOOK WHEN IT WAS PUBLISHED AND WONDER IF SHE'LL KEEP IT FOR SUCH A LONG TIME.

hOW MANY OTHERS STILL HAVE ONLY BOOKS AND STILL FIND THEM IFORMATIVE
