I cannot sleep, having been sent a message from someone looking for their Grandad, with the same name as my Father! It would not be totally impossible.

I am now wondering if I have a brother or sister that I was unaware of..... how likely is this? How do people get all the information from records? I now have this persons name and mothers maiden name. i have sent a reply and wait patiently! Help please, can I look for any info myself to find out if this is my relative?

Abigail, records between 1920 ish & 1984 are not indexed. You would have to trawl through the births & marriages 1/4 by 1/4 for each year. How much success you would have would depend on how unusual the name is. If your dad married twice you may stand a chance but if he had a base child he/she may well be listed just in the mum's name which you wouldn't find him/her.

I would suggest that as this person has contacted you, they will be back in touch with you tomorrow.

Now you could stay up all night trawling through & still find nothing so I would suggest that you make yourself a warm drink & go to bed

Is it a common surname? They could be just contacting everyone with that name.

How unusual is your father's name, are there any other details that match up? I think you will just have to be patient and wait for a reply.

i found 2 sisters i knew nothing about until i serched this site for my surname and found someone looking for my dad.
