Sue, that's a great idea with the online group! Never thought to do that....gives me a few ideas!

Kate: Not much, myself with web design, although my sister Linda, our webmaster, took the full web masters course and she's mastered it pretty well. I supply the info, she posts it. My mother, 77 years old, maintains the current events sections....keeps her busy! I'm off to work but taking my laptop with me so will check out your site when I get there.

I've got a really basic one - I learnt at uni that I was terrible at web design (although I have spoken to a web designer since who told me it took him five years to master the programme that uni wanted us to learn in ten weeks) so I found a site where it's free, all set up for you and you just add your own pictures and text.

There is the facility to join the site and leave messages and start threads, too. I started off trying to write about each family as a narrative, but when children have children and then they have children etc it gets complicated to organise so now I create a report from my family tree programme, then delete my unsubstantiated notes and any references to people who are a) definitely living or b) born less than 100 years ago, and copy and paste what is left into the text box on whichever page I'm doing.

It needs updating at the moment but I haven't had chance to do it yet - there's some bits about local history that I've added, too. If anyone wants to browse it's at:

I don't have family websites as such but I do run several Yahoo groups (members only) for some of my surnames. These are rare surnames and the descendants are probably all related.

One of the groups now has 76 members worldwide and we share information, photos etc about what we've uncovered. Gradually we are creating links and a lot of the members have found that they are definitely related.

I do my best to hunt down others who may be helped by our research and invite them to join.
