I agree with Daff, it's the parent's business what they call their child. I notice the Olivers have gone for a flowery theme with all their children. Lets face it names such as Mary, Ann/e, John, William etc are all only common because lots of people chose them. If only a few people had chosen them then they'd have been unusual too. Personnally, I'm not a big fan of Petal, if going for a flowery theme I would have gone for Lily or something similar but that's me.

Edit: Meant to say when she gets older she'll probably drop the usage of the second and third names.

I don't think it has anything to do with anyone else, lol.... I called my younger son a perfectly ordinary name, and 15 years later a comic (?) turned the diminutive of it and his other name into a foul expression!! He now chooses to be called something else!! Don't blame him, either.

My husband's famiily made our lives pretty miserable for a long time because they didn't approve of the old fashioned Welsh name we had chosen for our first son. Our choice of name for our son should have had nothing to do with anyone else... it was no-one's business but ours.

Anyway... there is research out there to suggest that those children given names that stand out generally do better than those with more *ordinary* names... and we are geneologists... we know that people have had the oddest names throughout history!!

Good luck to her... and her parents... one thing I do know is that she will be loved, treasured and adored by her parents, as are her little sisters, and that really is what matters.

Why don't parents think? Pity the poor child at school. Think it was Paula Yates who started this sort of thing.

Where do they come up with these names.I bet she wont want to be called Petal when she gets older .As in "all right Petal"
I must be a bit old fashioned not wanting to saddle a child with a name that can taken the mick out of later on.

Hopefully they will never move to an area where some of the population use 'eh up petal' as a greeting or else the poor childs going to be very puzzled as to why everyone seems to know her name.

More seriously why not just give the child one 'normal' name?
