I work in support, and all my staff are fully qualified, fully trained, and most important, caring, not all support/carers are l;ike that.

Gillian,My 19 year old daughter does care and she watched that in horror. She had just come home off of a 12 hour shift and said her home was very strict. When i worked in sheltered housing and we had care staff come in they also were under pressure. They would bring Maud down for dinner then nip off and do someone else a dinner then come back and take Maud back to her flat.Always rushing around. The carers themselves were lovely people but given too much work..Think carers need a pay rise and extra staff bought in. I wanted to watch that but missed it cos o.h. was recording something else and watching yet another programme. He couldn't understand why I was interested, as we have no one in care or having carers in, I told him we should all be aware of things that go on, maybe later his father and step mum will need care. He said he would give up work and look after them, yeah right, can't see that happening for long, he is very squeamish and has no patience and they live about 7 miles away! Two or more visits a day, no way? He really lives in cloud cuckoo land.

My poor cousin who is 89 in June told me yesterday on the phone, that one of the carers who went in to see her broke her new hearing aid so she is having to manage with the old one, not working very well, talking to her was a struggle. She had one carer go in who was really nasty to her so she complained, yet they sent the woman again cos they said they were short staffed. When J. said she didn't want her in there because she had been nasty before, the woman denied ever calling on her! The complaint is still being investigated. I know my elderly neighbour had some good carers and some horrible ones, until there is consistent training and fair wages, I suppose it will often be hit and miss.

I am glad there are good places to go tho. I wouldn't want to do the job.

Watching the programme last night made me shudder, to think these poor people are dependant on this company for the essentials of life, and they get treated like this. I do appreciate that home carers are on a time limit, but surely they could do better than this, I often wonder why some of these people do this job, it certainly is not for the money. But for every bad carer, I believe there are a dozen good ones.

Sorry Gillian, I didn't see this thread, I have posted on the other one.
Keep up the good work, I know how much you love your job, although very tiring for you.

Morning Gillian

I once had such a long thread, my brother was treated so badly by Carers and yet at the same time, he has in different homes received such loving care, even calling one 'Mum' and she was, you know, she looked on him as a son and was such a shining example of the many excellent, wonderful people who work as Carers, not only caring yet giving dignity, love and more.

To quote you, 'for every bad carer, I believe there are a dozen good ones', and there are.

I was quite overwhelmed by the help, support, care and advice I received here from the many caring Carers who came to provide comfort and helped me at such a dreadful time. I take my 'cap' off to them, truly I do. They have my respect and thanks for the care they provide and give.

I changed my career from Secretary to carer when my Dad developed dementia, I was in awe of the way the wonderful carers treated him, they even came to his funeral and shed a tear, which showed me how much they cared. I now work in Support, which is a little different, we enable those with learning difficulties to lead a full life, include them in the community etc. it is not all easy going believe me, but when I see the ladies laughing and being "them" its so rewarding. So well done to all you carers who work so hard for little money, pat yourselves on the back, you are doing a fantastic job XX..
