I have looked again and you could well be right. It is a strange page with what looks like additions and extra squiggles. There is a lot of clothing industry in the area. Thanks again for looking.

Interesting idea.

Looking at the original though it is just the first letter that is unclear and I have compared the letter to other words on the page.

May be I will never know.

I wondered if anyone else had come acrooss it.

I will keep trying. Somewhere in storage I hace a book on historical costume but it will be a while before I can unpack it.

Yes looks like RAHYS, at first I thought maybe " Ladys" but on second look you could be right about the "R"

I have looked OED, Chambers scientific dictionary and Encyclopedia Brittanica all drew a blank

Perhaps its the name of the factory where she worked?

That is what it says on the census, I wondered if it was a fabric name, Most of the family were silk tie or cravate maker or linked occupations in Hackney,

Emily's occupation is Machinist (Rahys Under Clothing)
I tried to google to see what Rahys underclothing was but was not sure if I really wanted to wiew some of the results. Anyone know what Rahys is?
