Dear All,
I appear to have hit a brick wall in my research of my family tree. Is it common for women to change their christian names after marriage. I have my gr'fathers birth crtificate stating his mothers name (Lily) including maiden name, and have been able to find the family in the 1901 census. However there is no record of her in the 1891 census. Her maiden surname (Slade) is rare for the area(s) I am looking for, there is however an Elizabeth G Slade for the same year of birth in the area. Where do I go from here? Any tips/ suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards

Craig

for the record: Lily Jones (Nee Slade)born C1876 @ Aberavon Wales

Christian names given to enumerator changed seemingly at will.

Some of mine appear by their given name or shortened form or even pet name. Not terribly helpful unless you can pin down another family member on the same census.

Have you got her marriage cert as this will ,hopefully, give her dads name & occupation which may help identify her on earlier census,Plus if you decided to go for that birth cert you could use her dads name as a checking point.
Another thought ! who registered grandfathers birth .was it dad if so he may have registered her name as the one he called her.For instance, my paternal nans second husband registered the births of their first two children and he stated mums name as Annie cos thats what he called her .her name was in fact Emma Ann !

I wouldn't say it was common for women to change name as such, but often I have seen that a girl whose given name is the same as her mother's appears on census in her middle name or 'pet' name that she is known by to family.

if you put the 1901 census details on here that you are sure of I am sure someone will have a good idea (will take a look myself later )

Craig, on the 1911 census they have transcribed my grandmother down as Jane, her name was Jeanne. I told them this but they will not change it It quite clearly says Jean - although obviously the transcriber did not know that Gran had extra letters( "ne") on the end. When I first looked at the census I said out lout who the heck is Jane lol! I also have another ancestor who has been transcribed with the incorrect name, so its not unheard of. It just makes looking for our ancestors "more interesting" !

Good luck in your search.

Hi all.... while you are helping Graig, could i ask a question?

I have also hit a brick wall and my problem is similar...
I am looking my G.G.grandfather...
I do have his name on his daughter's marriage certificate.
When I try to find him elsewhere I am having troubles.
I think I have him, but in one of the census His daughter AGNES becomes NANCE.... is that ever a form of AGNES?
Good luck Graig. A brick wall is so frustrating.

If the 1901 census is the right family then she seems to have married as Lily in 1895 which is about the time frame for the first childs birth shown on the 1901.
We need some feedback Craig!!!

To all,

Thank you for all your help its been extremely helpful. I had found the right family in the 1901 census(in Blaenavon). Thank you Shirley for the details about the marriage I couldn't find them, were they on the marriages on this site? If so I must have had word blindness.!!! How did you identify the marriage as September of 1895?

Thanks Again

Craig
