I have just found that someone has copied photo's of my relations from another site. I would never dream of copying photo's of people who were in someone else's tree. They are not even related to this person. Had I known this kind of thing would happen I would never have included pictures. Surely this person should have asked if this is ok??
Please be aware of this.

I feel like deleting both my trees but that won't help as they have now been copied. Why copy a picture of someone who is in no way related to you??

This has taught me a very big lesson to not include anything on trees and I will now put it all on paper and delete details.

I had that two weeks ago and I was most indignant. In fact I have deleted all photographs from my Ance**** website that has people in them and gone private.

I sent the person involved an email saying that it would have been curteous to ask first. They came back and apologised asking if I wished them to delete the photograph.

I have sent a message to this person. I know what I will be doing over the next few days, deleting photo's & info!!

I fully understand that tree's overlap (ie my relatives are related to other people too) but to copy pics without asking first. The one that annoyed me most is of someone who is in no way related to this person. No wonder this person has 10048 people in their tree.

Oh, one of those name collectors - well we could all start a name collector tree and say that we are all related together "somewhere" along the line! lol.

I am happy with my 230 (at present,) and dont expect to get many more. As long as I know my GGGG grandparents am happy. Got two surnames am having difficulty with which need me to get certificates - once I have those I will be a happy girl! lol

Hope you get an apology from the person involved.

I have photos on this site and I have put a message to ask people not to copy without permission. I am hoping that people will ask first.

Hi Whippet Lady,
If the person who copied your photos & tree details doesn't delete them from their tree at you request.
Then contact the website administrators & explain the problem. They'll probably removed them from that persons tree for you.

Yes well Island This will not happen to me again as I am deleting ALL my pics from my tree as well as all but the very basic info, I may even delete it all together!!

This happened to me, someone actually took all the photo's, cert etc and my whole tree, when I checked I found they had got the connection wrong and emailed them to tell them, they didn't change anything. Another one did the same thing and when I wrote and said there wasn't a connection he had different parents names - he changed the names!! I emailed the site concerned and they just told me to contact the people involved who didn't even reply to my email! I understand how frustrated you are about this, I too removed that tree from the site and removed all photo's, certs etc from all websites and just keep them on my software and in files. I have learned a big lesson with this, it would be nice if they had asked first but that would be in an ideal world. Don't let them get you down.

On Ancestry trees, if two ancestors are the same person and one of them has a photograph, it is possible to automatically copy the picture to the same person on your own tree. The photograph even appears as an Ancestry hint. An acknowledgement of the original uploader of the photograph is also added in your tree.

Being a bit of a Devil's Advocate here but why would anyone put personal photos or certificates on a tree which is open to the public?

My family photos are in an old fashioned album and a few are on my computer so I can share them with relations. A very few are of ancestors on my GR tree but not ones which would worry me if they were copied.

Once anything is put online and shared there is no longer any control of where it ends up. The only way to keep personal information or images restricted to people you really want, is to keep them offline.

I agree that if you don't want to share it, don't put it on here. If someone is daft enough to copy irrelevant details, their tree will be incorrect, their loss. I have a large tree (2000+) and if I find info from parish records which connects, I add it in. At least one person has thanked me as she found info she would not otherwise have had and I am pleased to have helped.

We here this time & time again on this foram.

I had me tree plundered on the ancestry.co.uk site.

The guy who did this copied a considerable amount of my ancestors including personal photo's, individual's stories, certificates & files even my beloved pets would you beleave !

I thought it was some sort of wind up joke at first.

It turned out he's one of these name collectors on the ancestry & also GR sites, I can't prove it but I reckon he has multiple tree's under alias names which is in breach of the GR Terms & Conditions.

Sue from Somerset I see where you are coming from and I agree with you to a certain extent, but don't forget I bet you like showing your photo album off to friends and the like.

The only way to sort this problem out once and for all is to design the website so the public CAN VIEW PERSONAL PHOTO'S BUT NOT COPY THEM.

Simple has that.

If you want to show photos to family and friends the best thing is to have albums on a photo web site which allows you to select who to show them to.

I have albums on a web site called Picturetrail. Some of my albums on there are available to be seen by anyone but I keep one private with a password for family and close friends.

I have had a reply. The person has deleted pictures & not what I expected but also 9 of my relations. I am pleased with this outcome, which is more than I expected.
I am always extremely careful but I am now going to make paper pages of each person I have(which is over 200!!).
If nothing else it will make others aware.
