One summer I was revising in the garden, lying on a duvet on the path.A small bee or wasp would not leave me alone and was annoying me a bit.
When I got up after several hours the little thing shot into a tiny round hole I had noticed beside me.

One day an enormous bee will come and lie across my house so I can't get in and it will serve me right!

Well talk of the devil, I have just seen a hover fly outside the window, this sunshine must have brought them up from underground.

I thought it was supposed to be dull and wet today - can the weather people not get it right?

Tsk!

We get some of the types of solitary bees in our garden. Sometimes we have leaf cutter bees which like to put their eggs wrapped in leaves in short pieces of cane we hang in our greenhouse. I like following them and watching them cut out circles from rose leaves.

We've seen masonary bees at the bottom of our garden.

A couple of years ago I noticed a bee in our bedroom and I shooed it out. It kept coming back in and then I realised it was a potter bee which had built a sweet little pot shaped nest made of mud but it was between our curtains and the lining! So that had to go.

Funny how you notice these things.

Last summer we were in the garden and my grandson saw a large bumble bee land on the lawn and disappear. When we looked there was a small hole in the lawn.

We decided to sit and watch for a while and it reappeared and flew off. We were out there for a few hours and we are sure it was only the one bee which kept coming back at intervals and disappearing back down the hole. Quite fascinating. We must keep a look out this summer and see if it happens again.

One of the funniest things we saw a couple of years ago was a big bumble bee which must have decided it needed a rest and landed on our tortoise. There she was plodding round the garden with the bee on her shell.

Hi Yorkshire Pud, there are some 25 native species of the bumble bees in Britian & Ireland. As Budgie & Carol have already said, some of these nest underground.

The humble bumble bee has been declining for many years & are vital for the pollenation of native plants.
They only build small colonies & should be welcomed into our gardens. They prefer to feed on pollen & nectar of traditional cottage garden flowers & native wildflowers.

I found this website about the British bumble bees that maybe of interest to you.

hi Ann, its a mud path by the side of my fence. we are plagued by ants but these holes were too big and i thought i saw lots of young bees hovering around, because their backs were orange.

Not sure Pud!, sorry put the wrong name down Tsk! I suggest googling and see. I only know I have those in my garden lawn, they are harmless but annoying. Apparently they eat larvae and are good to have in the garden! I would prefer it if they went somewhere else! lol

Where are your "insects" coming from?

EDIT: Have a look at this site, it has Masonry bees etc with pictures and descriptions.

hi Tina, i think you may be right, i wouldnt be lucky enough for them to be bees.although they did have orange backs is that the norm for those flies?

Is that the hover flys that come from underground. i will have a google and look up for you. We have what looks like bees coming from the ground every year in our garden and they hover cannot think of the correct name for them.

Hang on ! lol
