Have you lost a man whose name appears quite unexplainedly in Portsmouth in the early censuses?

Don't discount it as impossible.Whilst looking for something else I was delighted to come across returns for the prison hulks in Portsmouth Harbour.

I suppose I had never thought about it before but was quite surprised to find that some of the convicts came from the north of England.Imagine the awful journey of despair from home to hulk.Doesn't bear thinking about does it?

not just men - some women were held there too, while waiting to be transported.
The Floating Brothel is an excellent book about female transportees.
