We all stayed here last night, just to check she was still good.

She had a great night, hardly a sniffle!

Happy to go to Lynda, their childminder, today.

Fingers crossed, she is on the mend!

Cheers

Thank you all, for your replies and good wishes.

Good news is that she was discharged this morning. She is downstairs, now, with her brother, just delighted to be out. When we collected her and her mum, first thing she did was proudly show me her wrists, and say 'look Gran, no more needles!' .Bless her.

Hopefully a closer eye will be kept on Sophie, and avoid a repeat of what she has gone through.

Cheers

Hi gail
Unfortunately in the UK hospital system they send the most junior inexperienced person to do the menial chores.
IE insert IV cannulas.
This is ok for adults (unless they are needle phobic)because everyone needs to learn somewhere but not for children
So the first thing I would ascertain next time is that the person coming to do the iv can get it first pop even with there eyes closed.
If thats not the person they have sent then stand your ground be pleasant but firm explain there has been some difficulty with her veins and insist they go and get the appropriate person for the job
EMLA cream is useful in some respects but if you have a good practitioner that does the job fast its often best to just get it over and done with.
Once it is in make sure it is extremely secure with tape and bandages and make sure it is flushed appropritely so it can be maintained as long as possible.
If this is a really regular occurance they can look at a more long term solution talk to your GP about maintaining her asthma and avoiding the chest infections and getting antibiotics before it is established enough to require IV

Bless her ... not nice... I know first hand how it hurts & not just when the canular goes in, the antibiotics are stronger than the ones used oraly & sting as they go into the vein.

Awwwww bless her heart, I hope she has no more needles and comes home tomorrow.

It must be so frightening for her, bad enough for us grown ups who know why they do these things.

7 years ago they did the same as DET says on my youngest.

On another occassion they were trying to get a small amount of blood out of him & used his foot - I lost count of the number of times they tried. In the end he was crying

"Don't let them give me another bloody foot!"

Every time we went to hospital he would say
"Am I going to get another bloody foot!"

Thanks you, Amanda and Hazel.

Sophie does seem to be much improved, and I know that docs have to be cautious. Just hoping that they are right, and that my wee Sophie, is home tomorrow.

Thank you to you both, for your replies.

They removed the canular, when I was with my daughter and granddaughter today,at 1.30, as doc had said at morning visit, that they planned to cease use of iv by 5.00. Removal was done early, as nurse was concerned that the site of the canular, was swollen and infamed!

My daughter has just contacted me , to say that a different nurse, approached her, as she was giving Sophie a bath, now that she was free of iv canular, to say that another doc was coming to re-insert canular.

My daughter, Gemma, naturally said no, to this idea, pointing out, that Sophie was due to cease use of iv, at 5pm. Doc has subsequently looked at Sophie's wrists, and expressed concern at their condition. She has agreed that any further treatment Sophie may require, will be done orally!

Is it any wonder, that wee Soph stresses at the mention of medicine?

Thanks again.

My Granddaughter, Sophie, 5, is been back in our local hospital.
A combination of a chest infection, and an asthma attack. I stayed with her Friday night, to give her mum a break. During my stint, they had to re insert Sophie's iv canuler, as it was pulled out, when the nurses tried to administer an anti biotic, through her iv.

It took 4 attempts, to insert her canular, on her other hand. As she is five, this process was very traumatic for both of us.

Wee soul is now so stressed at the thought of anyone going near her, it is heartbreaking. As she had been having this done since she was 2, it is understandably, distressing.Hopefully, she is home tomorrow.

Just wondering, if anyone with a medical background, or not, has any ideas, as to how this process could be made less traumatic for a five year old, who has been through this , a good few times.

Thanks everyone

Gail x
