We were recently told by the Passport Office that if a married woman was included on her husband's passport, - as was often the case,ie. joint passports, then a marriage certificate would have to have been shown.
We have a couple arriving with the same surname into England in 1957, but have yet to find a marriage for them, so wonder whether it took place in South Africa, where they sailed from.

You may need to ask was the name spelt correctly on the marriage index? where they married in another area/country? Were they married earlier than you thought?

Where are you checking for the marriage - if online, has that year been fully indexed?

Sorry cannot be more help. Good luck :-)

Were they travelling to or from Britain?
Are you able to give names so others can help search. You need to check the GRO quarter by quarter as the marriages after about early 1930s haven't been transcribed onto the freebmd site yet.

EvieBeavie Report 14 Apr 2009 01:18

The GRO index in Ancestry's complete database shows Sedgwick-Woodcock births in Birmingham in jan-mar quarter 1939 (i.e. possibly in late 1938) and apr-jun quarter 1942.

So was the marriage possibly a little earlier than you're thinking?

... not in 1937 or 1938, or first quarter 1939, that I can see, searching for Sedgwick.

Where did they go?

Findmypast has:

SEDGWICK C M 1916 F 1946 London Australia Australia

for example, but no Walter traveling with.

There is a registered one name study of one of those surnames.
Perhaps the researcher knows of a marriage.
