I have a relative who is listed in the BMD indexes as being born in Pickering - Yorkshire, however on the 1871 Census it says he was born in Helburn Cum Farnaby - Yorkshire. BUT I can't find any info about Helburn Cum Farnaby - Has anyone got any idea - to help please.

Thanks
Andy

It may be Farmaby near Thornton le Dale, which is in the Pickering area

FARMANBY, a township in the parishes of Ellerburn and Thornton Dale, wapentake and liberty of Pickering Lythe; 2 miles ESE. of Pickering. Pop. 403." - -(See Ellerburn for directory)

In fact helburn cum farnaby sounds like Ellerburn cum Farmaby, so the enumerator may just have misheard, especially if it was said in a broad Yorkshire accent. While I was digging round, I kept seeing the phrase, Ellerburn with Farmaby. In these parts we use cum to mean with in old place names.

Elleburn baptisms and marriages are on the IGi for
* C 1702-1875;
* M 1702-1837

so you should find him
