Radiator advice wanted

When our heating's on, we have 2 radiators that make a loud rumbling noise. This happens about once every 2 hours. The only thing that stops it is if we turn the thermostats up on the radiators. After 5 mins or so we can turn it down again. We had a gas man out, he said the thermostats were faulty and he replaced them....but it's made no difference! One radiator is directly above the other; one upstairs and one downstairs. We also had the sensors replaced on our boiler. Any ideas what is wrong and what we need doing? x

Sounds like you may have air in them. Can you bleed them?

Hi RS

The rads might need bleeding,,,,that is they might have an airlock in the system so on the top corner of each rad you will have a square bolt that needs to be slowly loosened while the system is on

but do not fully undo it else you will have a flood lol have a tea towel and saucepan handy,,,slowly undo till you have a slight trickle of water,,this will let any air out

dont forget to retighten

And, whatever you do, don't do it when the radiators are hot. However obvious this seems, my son refused to heed my advice ('Yeh, yeh, Mum, yawn, yawn) and burnt himself very badly.

Hi Romany,
Just as Ray has said, sounds like air in the system..

Also, dont forget to balance the system, adjust the inflow on each rad.

Helen, Ray, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'll force my husband into bleeding them, he insisted that wasn't the problem but I bet he hasn't done it.... thanks folks.
Thanks Foggy.

If you have thermostatic valves on your radiators, are they on the flow side?

I have heard that if they are on the return side that they can cause noise in the radiators.
