Assuming you run XP, start up in safe mode and run SFC.

Joanne I know you may not want to do this but its hard to explain what you need to do on here, if you'd like my other half Andy to take a look and try and repair it and get most if not all of the data back, especially your tree, he should defo get that back, we are in Cowfold, it's up to you, I can give you my phone number to give us a call.
He does data recovery.
Hubby is a techy.

This is the version of Linux that I use most, the link will down load a .ISO file which will have to be copied to a cd.

Once the file has been copied to a cd just reboot your pc and get it to boot from the cd, you might need to press F2 or the DEL key to enter the bios to change the boot order.

Once you have Linux on you Lappie just navigate to where your files are and then save them to a different location.

On the next reboot you should be presented with a choice of OS to start your Lappie from, one of which should be the partion which holds the information to take it back to Factory Settings

Its a bit hard to expain fully tonight as I have been to the pub and had a few to drink, but it is easier then it sounds honestly.

Thanks for replying.

I don't know how to install linux and would know even less how to do the recovery. I think that I will need to take it to local shop, I am just very nervous that I'm going to lose all of my files.

Could try installing a linux os on a duel boot.

You could then recover what ever files you want from the normal Operating System, and will also give you the option to restore the Lappie to factory setting.

If not take your lappie to a LOCAL pc shop and have them recover the files and restore the OS.

I have done a very stupid thing and think I have broken my laptop.

I was on a Facebook application that froze, nothing I did would unfreeze it, so I unplugged and removed battery.

I have now put back battery and the laptop won't boot up. All I get is a black screen with the following message:

Windows could not start because of an error in the software.
Please report this problem as:
load needed DLLS for kernel.
Please contact your support person to report this problem.

Now I have googled this error and it looks pretty serious. Most of the forums that I have read seem to say that with any repair I would lose all my files. Not good as apart from all the normal stuff, I have never backed up my family tree maker! I did try on various occasions, but it never seemed to work.
